In presenting this new brochure dealing with our famous Type Radial Drilling Machine
we take pardonable pride in referring to the vitally important service which Asquith enterprise is rendering to the engineering industry in the march of progress. Asquith experience dates back to 1865, and whilst we have little time for those who base their reputation on age alone, we do claim that the Asquith record is one of persistent progress and enduring service to the needs of industry.
For nigh on forty years we have specialised in drilling and boring machines, and succeeding designs have been widely acclaimed by those qualified to judge as being well-ahead of contemporary design. That is why Asquiths are regarded as leading authorities on drilling and boring practice.
This reputation is enhanced and consolidated by the Type Radial which is already an accepted standard by which drilling machines are judged, and which has earned worldwide popularity because of its high-productive and economy-compelling characteristics. The superiority of the design is at once apparent from a perusal of the following pages which illustrate and describe in detail the exclusive features of the type most of which are fully protected by patents, and we have no hesitation in claiming that the standard of workmanship and materials together with the studied principles of functional design and manipulation

The vital link between the driving motor and spindle, gears are designed to take full advantage of modern high speed cutting tools up to the diameters specified in the capacity
chart, with a reserve of energy. The spur driving gears are made from nickel chrome steel, case hardened and accurately ground, ensuring smooth noiseless running at high speeds.

CONCENTRATED EFFICIENCY
An impressive view of the gear box showing the compactness of the gear assembly. The short stiff driving shafts are made from nickel steel, heat treated, ground, and instead of the usual keyways are solid six-splined, the splines also being accurately ground. Holes broached for sliding gears. No loose keys.

SPINDLE BARREL
The material from which the spindle is made is high grade alloy steel, suitably heat treated for standing up to heavy duty. The nose with the internal Morse Taper for receiving drills, etc, is treated up to 120 tons tensile, consuring long life and maximum durability under constant changing of tools. The spindIe is solid six-splined in the driving part, ground on the splines, and has phosphore bronze bearings of great length in its supporting barrel. The thrust on the spindle is taken by ball thrust washers. The barrel or sleeve for the spindle is, in which the feed bracket is cut from the solid. Even when out at full traverse there is ample supporting area of barrel in the spindle slide casting.

SPINDLE SYSTEM
This picture affords a clear illustration of the Spindle Driving system. The final drive is by high efficiency worm gearing
specially produced by a leading firm of gear specialists. Trouble free transmission is an axiom. Another peep into the heart of the showing the arrangement of the feed, gearing. The gears are made from nickel steel heat treated to suitable strength. Motion to the gears is transmitted from the
main feed shaft by friction, no keys being employed, thus ensuring freedom from damage in the event of accidental obstruction such as over-running of spindle, etc. Four changes of feed are obtainable by the operaation of a single lever.

LUBRICATION
The inherent principle of smooth, trouble-free running is further enhanced by the highly efficient system of lubrication. The main working parts of the machine, the gears in the slide, are arranged to run in oil baths ensuring continuous lubrication wíth maximum effectiveness. The
elevating gears at the top of the pillar also run in an oil bath and the all levels in both slide and top box are readily visible through conveniently placed sight glasses. Apart from these baths, which only requires occasional replenishment, very little attention to lubrication is necessary, thus saving operators time. As will be seen from the chart reproduced
here, daily attention is confined to the application of the oilcan to a few superficial points. To ensure maximum efficiency, oil of good quality is essential, and following is the specification we recommend:

Its an easy matter to get the best out of the The diffıculty would be to get anything but the best. Every feature is so well-planned, every adjustment so facile, that for all ordinary purposes its operation may be safely entrusted to a semiskilled workman. The essential controls are so disposed that the operator carries out the correct sequence
subconsciously, and mechanical precautions render the machine proof against faulty operation. Hints on operation and maintenance are given in the operators handbook provided with each machine. Operation is simpficity itself, and it is only necessary to know the positions and functions of the various levers and handwheels to be able to work the machine satisfactorily. Therefore, in the following few pages we describe the functions of the various controls, and
once again emphasise the time and effortsaving characteristics of the the machine with truly concentrated control the ASQUITH ganrantee.
Machines and equipment of our make supplied by us are guaranteed against defective material or workmanship for a period of twelve months working on one shift from date of invoice. Parts admitted by us to be defective will be replaced free, but shall not form the subject of claims for labour or other expenditure not authorised by us, shall not include any carriage costs, and shall not be admitted as entailing any consequential damages.
OPPOSITE.
One of the handiest and greatest time-saving features
ever appIied to a radial drill is the Asquith Patented Ejector Device which enables drills, sockets, etc, when not cottered in to be ejected by merely winding the spindle back sharpIy to its top position. Saves time and avoids damage to spindle end. The pictures demonstrate the simplicity and effectiveness of the device. Cannot be fıtted when auxiliary spindle is suppIied. The patented combined lock already described on page 16 is sufficient for all normal duty, but for
exceptional duty such as opening out holes from
cored castings, heavy facing, etc, an additional heavy duty locking arrangement is available to the arm, operated by the lever shown in the illustration. A further handy function of this lever is the locking of the arm against radial adjustment
only, leaving it free for elevating and lowering without loss of position radially. Electrical interlock prevents application of the power elevating motion when the arm is fully locked on the pillar. Additional lock for exceptional duty is also provided to the spindle slide by means of separate

higher than 830 to 31 revolutions per minute, the maximum light boring and tapping capacities are slightly reduced.
CONSTRUCTION
The pillar the backbone of the machine is designed and constructed with the particular care merited by such an important member. Absolute rigidity and maximum
resistance against deflection at all working heights of the arm are primary objects which have been successfully achieved. Separate sleeve is eliminated and the arm is mounted directly on a single unit, thus reducing the number of points at which play can take place and further enhancing the efffıciency of the machine. The pillar is accurately ground for receiving the arm and from the 3 6 to 6 0 sizes
is of patented two-diameter form as shown in the illustration on page 21. It has bearing surfaces of large diameter.
On the 7 to 9 sízes the pillar is of one diameter throughout in order to allow for a low minimum height under the spindle and baseplate, whilst allowing of a maximum height
under the spindle appropriate for these larger size models. In its single diameter form it retains all the essential features and strength of the basic design. ARM. The arm also is of special robust design for meetíng modern heavy duty needs. It is well-ribbed and braced to ensure maximum resistance against lifting and twisting stresses, and careful measurement during heavy drilling test has revealed its absolute effıciency in this direction. Well-extended bearings and a ѕpecіal arrangement of rollers provide very easy radial adjustment. The design of the arm and the perfectly-balanced mounting of the spindIe slide, in addition to ensuring the easy traverse of the latter component, enable the spindle to be brought close to the face of the arm affording extra resistance against side twist. Accuracy of spindle alignment is permanently maintained.
BASEPLATE.
The baseplate is designed to ensure great strength for resistance against
deflection. It is of box construction, a form much superior to the usual design with open underside, and has large T slots for securing the work. Trough is provided for draining lubricant back to a sump which is formed at one end, and strainers guard against cuttings entering this sump.
All castings for the are produced in our own Foundry and are made from high quality cast iron in accordance with the latest specifıcation for high duty castings. Close grained, and of high Brinnell hardness, these castings are made to an analysis which ensures maximum durabilíiy in service and high vibration absorption capacity. An expert staff exercises close metallurgical control throughout the manufacturing process.

This veritable constellation of bright spots exemplifies
the basic economy-compeling principles of design.
Anti-friction bearings are introduced wherever they can be usefully employed, ensuring perfect alignment, smooth trouble-free running, accuracy of machining, and effortless
hand adjustment of heavy components such as the traversing of the slide along the arm and radial movement of the arm around the pillar. These characteristics
are permanently maintained. A perfect engineering job.

BEARINGS
FUNCTION WITH THE MINIMUM OF FRICTION
Composite illustration on page 25 serves to give a general idea of the Electrical system. Our patented arrangement of switchgear is embodied in the design, and certain special characteristics are called for in the motors to ensure the high effıciency for which the type is noted. We have
collaborated with our suppIiers in producing motors to meet the requirements, and these are manufactured exclusively for us. Whether for direct or alternating current, the driving motor is suitable for very heavy duty and continuous reversing. In the case of direct-current supply there is no diffıculty in regard to high-speed reversing owing to the characteristics of the motor which must, however, conform to certain mechanical requirements. The ełevating motor in this case is of the series wound type, short rated.
When the supply is alternating current, drive is by specially-designed squirrel cage motor having all the characteristícs and efficiency of ťhe type plus the abiłity to withstand continuous reversing duty up to twenty reversals per minute. The alternating-current elevating motor is of the high torque, short-rated squirrel cage type.
The driving motor is horizontally and rigidly mounted directly on the spindle slide on patented adjustable bracket, which enables either a 5 or 7 motor, or motors differing in frame size, to be accommodated a great facility when, for example, changing over from to supply, etc. Machines are despatched compIeteIy wired up, the cable ending in a junction box at the foot of the column ready for coupłing up to the mains. From this box the cable is carried up inside the column to collector ring and gear, which allows the radial arm to be rotated continuously in either direction
without twisting or otherwise damaging the cable. From the collector gear the cable is carried through armoured casing to the motors. To facilitate erection after transit, etc, multiple pin pIugs and sockets are provided at suitable points
enabling reassembly to be carried out quickly without danger of wrong connections. We can supply as an extra and recommend particuiarly for machines to be
used for drilling steel an independent motor-driven pump mounted in the baseplate, its suction pipe and strainer
immersed in the sump formed in the baseplate, from which the coolant is drawn and delivered to the drillpoint. The piping is so arranged that the arm can be rotated continuousiy around the pillar, coolant being avaiłable at all positions for multiple setting without fouling the piping connections by arm or slide movements.
