The Bridgeport Series One is a milling drilling and boring machine that with the combination of head ram turret and table movements can machine a workpiece longer and wider than its own table and from any angle

THE BRIDGEPORT LEGACY
The original Bridgeport turret mill was designed in 1938 by Magnus Wahlstrom and Rudolph Bannow two Swedish engineers living in America They found that conventional machines could not utilize the full capabilities of the milling drilling and boring head they had been building since 1928 Their new design provided a totally new concept in milling machines
The versatility of this new machine allowed the milling head to be moved into practically any position relative to the table and workpiece Not only could it machine an area larger than the table but by rotating the head through 180 degrees a second head mounted on the opposite end of the ram could be used This permitted milling and boring operations to be followed by shaping and slotting without disturbing the original setup
It was a brilliant concept and this versatility has remained one of the hallmarks of the Bridgeport Series One
For certain photographs in this leaflet the machine cutter guard has been removed to present the application with greater clarity Cutter guards must be fitted at all times when the machine is in operation
STANDARD DEMONSTRATION CUT

Type 2J2 Head
IT S TOUGHER THAN YOU THINK MILLING HEADS
The very high quality of the component parts and assembly procedures enables extraordinarily heavy cuts to be made in relation to the power supplied. The type 2J2 milling head is powered by a 2 4kW 3hp motor with infinitely varíable spindle speeds from 50 to 3750 rpm, whilst the 3/4-1V2kW 1-2hp motor of theType J heads providesl5 changes of speed in the range
67 to 4600 rpm.
The quill is hard chrome plated, accurately ground and lapped to fit the honed bore in the main casting. The sensitive hand feed lever and slow feed handwheel are readily detachable for operator convenience. There are three rates of power feed in both dírections.
Maximum productivíty ís assisted by a quíck release depth stop for adjusting quill depth. When setting the feed disengagement position for accurate boring and míllíng operations, the micro- adjuster can be moved rapidly to the approxímate positíon followed by minimal adjustment for fine positioníng.
The design of the positive quill clamp prevents over-tíghtenìng and risk of quìll distortion, while a slipping clutch mechanism provides protectíon from overload.
SUPERIOR DESIGN AIR EXHAUST BELT HOUSING MOTOR
BELT HOUSING AND MOTOR SUPPORT REVERSE FLOW AIR COOLING
The belt housing and motor support may be swivelled through The unique and patented air coolíng system of the 2J2 head 360`, enabling the head to be used in posítions where the housíng ensures that the heat build-up in the spíndle bearings, belt and oг support might otherwise foul. quil is kept to an absolute minímum. This is achíeved by the air being drawn into the housing past the spindle bearings by the rotation of the drive belt and finally emitted out of the exhaust atthe top. Dístortíon is avoided by maintaining the operating temperature to within 11 C 20 F of ambient, resulting in
increased belt and bearíng life and maintained accuracy.
SPINDLE AND R8 TAPER
The R8 spindle taper was specíally designed for the Bridgeport Series Oпe and facílitates the interchangeability of a wide range of spindle toolíng. 1t is now accepted as a standard by leading spindle and tool chuck manufacturers over the world. The majority of the work carried out on the Series Oпe is end milling using collets, which with the R8 taper can be located directly ínto the spindle nose. Thís reduces the distance between
the spindle bearíng and the end of the cutter to a minimum.
The quick actíng spindle brake may be locked on to facilitate rapid tool changing.
SUPERIOR DESIGN RAM CLAMP
The ram runs in vee slideways and is moved backwards and forwards through a rack and pinion mechanísm to enable accurate positioning. The Bridgeport patented method of clampíng the ram is to expand the ram into the slídeways on top of the turret. This method gives a wider area of contact for a very rígid joint, so increasing stiffness and reducing vibration.
CENTRALISED LUBRICATION
Correct lubrication gives longer accurate lífe to the machine,reducing maintenance and making the machine more sensitive and easier for the operator to work. A centralised system lubricates slideways, leadscrews and the bevel gears of the knee elevating mechanism. Operation by a single lever saves the operator time and makes it easy to give each moving part the correct amount of oil, pre-determined by a series of inetering
valves built into the system.
EASE OF OPERATION
HARD CHROME SLIDEWAY OPT10N
The manufacturíng specifícation includes the option of hard chrome plated slideways to gíve extra years of accurate life. The special Poeton-Tíbon precísion process enables the hand scraped slídeway to be hard chrome plated to a uniform thíckness of approximately The surfaces plated are:
1. Top of cross slíde - longítudinal movement.
2. Top of knee - cross movement.
З. Cross slide to table gib.
Poeton chrome platíng becomes an integral part of the base casting and since heat is not involved in the process, it causes no stresses or straíns. The slightly porous deposít provides an idea4 lubricant absorbing surface with an extremely 1ow co-efficient of friction and also gíves corrosion resistance to the slideways.
Hardness exceeds Rockwell , giving outstanding wear qualities.
SUPERIOR CAPACITY
The highlysuccessful Brídgeportconceptof utilizing the combined movements of table cross-slide, ram and turret, allows a component considerably larger than its own table to be machíned without the necessìty of costly re-setting procedures. The Seríes One table size of 1065mm x 230mm 42 x 9 has proved to be more than adequate for a vast number of jobs that might otherwíse have requíred a considerably arger and more expensíve machine.
BRIDGEPORT UNIT HEADS
.Whilst the Type J , 2J2 and E heads are prímaríly íntended for use on the Bridgeport machine, their independent motor dríve ìaгa ;
makes them suitable for use on other conventíonal milling machines and special purpose tools.
TYPE `E SLOTTING AND SHAPING HEAD OPT10N
