Broadbent Oil Country Lathe Series BL16HSK
heavy duty oil country lathes 750 mm and 850 mm swíng 416 mm 16 8 spindle bore
seríes B L16 H S K І

The drive to the headstock is transmitted by heavy-duty Vee belts from a 30 HP motor mounted at the end of the bed and provided with means for adjustment of belt tension. Totally enclosed guarding, adequately vented for cooling, is provided. A heavy-duty clutch transmits the drive to the headstock. Spindle braking is provided by a fail-safe brake, which in the event of a power failure, will automatically operate.

Headstock
The headstock has a range of 18 speeds, forward or reverse, selected by conveniently grouped and easily operated levers. All headstock layshafts are mounted on ball or roller bearings, and precision shaved sliding gears move on multi-splined shafts. An efficient lubrication system is provided to all gears and bearings.

Spindle
The large diameter, accurately machined spindle is mounted on 4 TIMKEN precision taper roller bearings. A pair of pre-loaded bearings are mounted at the front end of the spindle, and a double-bearing assembly allowing spindle expansion is mounted at the rear end.

Speed Range

Feedbox
The totally enclosed universal feedbox is of the multi-change type, providing 40 changes of feed and threads, both English and metric, without alteration of change gears. The feed range per/rev. is 0.002 to 0.055 mm for sliding and 0.032 mm for surfacing. The screw-cutting range is 2 to 56 TPI and 0.14 to 14 mm pitch without alteration of change gears.

The design and construction of the feedbox offer accuracy of threading and smoothness of feed transmission. Precision gears and multi-splined shafts are mounted on ball bearings and lubricated by pump-circulated oil. Feed and thread changes are made through sliding gears and dog clutches operated by conveniently grouped, interlocked levers.

A built-in automatic slipping clutch, being a multi-plate friction type, takes the drive to the feed shaft and is set to slip should overloading occur.

Standard Feed Range - Sliding
Values given are for sliding feeds. Surfacing feeds are halved.

Screwcutting
Thread Range pítch
35 metric and 40 inch pitches without using change gears .

By use of the swing plate and the set of change gears supplied as extra equipment, circular pitches, diametral pitches from 4 to 96, and metric module pitches up to 7 can be cut.
A 10:1 coarse pitch arrangement located in the end drive enables all feeds and screw-cutting pitches to be increased 10 times. This operates on the 9 slowest spindle speeds only.

Bed
The wide bed is an amply proportioned, deep box section, cross-braced to eliminate distortion and deflection under the most severe working conditions. The casting is of close-grained iron, chill cast. Wide inverted vee bedways for the saddle and tailstock ensure sustained accuracy and alignment. The standard 5060 mm (16'7") bed admits 3000 mm (9'10") between centers and can be supplied with or without a single removable gap piece.

The feet of the machine supporting the bed are drilled for foundation bolts and tapped for leveling screws, ensuring accurate location and alignment of the lathe. Fixed supports for the leadscrew are fitted to all bed lengths, and sliding supports are fitted to the feed shaft on long beds. Flame-hardened and ground beds are available on machines up to 6000 mm (19'8") between centers.

Tailstock
The tailstock is of heavy construction, designed to withstand maximum cutting forces. It is aligned to the bed by inverted vee and flat guideways. A traversing arm connecting with the bed rack is fitted to provide easy movement of the tailstock along the bed. The large diameter precision-ground spindle is of the self-ejecting type and bored to No. 5 Morse taper. A thrust rack, cast integral with the bed, is provided and, when engaged, enables the tailstock to withstand heavy thrust loads.

Apron
The apron is totally enclosed and of the double-wall type, with all shafts supported at each end. Sliding and surfacing feeds are engaged through an electromagnetic clutch, controlled by push buttons mounted on the saddle. Automatic stops can be provided at extra cost. A dial indicator mechanism is included for correct engagement of the leadscrew when cutting English or American threads.

Rapid traverses to the saddle and cross slide are provided and take their drive from a flange-mounted motor built into the apron, controlled by a joystick-type controller. Lubrication to the apron is automatic and distributed by a pump. The leadscrew and half nuts are automatically lubricated when screw-cutting. A lever is also provided for reversing the direction of feeds.

Saddle

The saddle ís guided by a wíde inverted asymmetrícal vee-way on the front bed shear and ís fítted with a graduated compound slíde which may be swivelled to any angle through 360 . The standard top slide carríes a square toolpost of appropriate síze.
The saddle and top slide screws are protected from swarf and coolant by built-in slíding covers. English/Metric micrometer dials are fítted to both cross slide and top slide screws. An efficient lock ís províded to the saddle for use when surfacing. A push button control station ís mounted on the saddle wing, duplicating the motot controls fitted at the headstock end of the bed and in addítion push button controls for engagement and dís-engagement of feedś . A cable línk is fítted at the rear of tńe bed to carry power and coolant supply to the saddle.
The bedways are pressure lubricated by a pump located in the apron.
Plastíc bedway wipers are fitted to the saddle wíngs and all slides are fitted with adjustable gib stríps.
Steadíes Extra Equípment
The special outboard steady illustrated is a free standing unit which may be posítíoned to support the end of a long tube protruding beyond the rear chuck. It consísts of a pedestal supporting the half or open type 2-point гolleг steady; the pins are adjustable, covering a
range of workpíece diameters from 3 to 16.
The steady ís provided with a гolleг in line wíth the spindle. This roller caп Ьe raised and lowered with a hand operated screw jack and facilítates loadíng of long pipes through the spíndle bore.
A range of conventíonal 3 point statíonary steadíes with plain or roller dies ís available.
Taper Turníng Attachment
Extra Equipment
The attachment ís mounted on a bracket, carried on the back of the saddle. it consísts of a plate supporting the tapering slide havíng angular adjustment for inclusíve angles up to 200 by 20 maximum length of taper. The depth of cut ís applied by the cross-slíde
handwheel through a telescopic screw connected wíth the tapering slíde. It can be used for internal or external tapers.
A hydraulíc powered rapid tool wíthdrawal and leadscrew nut trip can be fitted with taper turning attachment. The trip points are set by stops on the bed and enable rapid threading to be carried out.
Copyíng Attachment Extra Equípment
90 Hydraulic copying can be fítted in lieu of taper turníng to produce tapers on pipe joints. Thís equípment also incorporates rapId tool wíthdrawal set by stops on the machíne bed. Auto tríps to the feed and screwcutting motion are also included.
This copy attachment ís fitted as an alternative to the taper turning attachment.
A front mounted copy unit is also available. Thís can be used in conjunction wíth a rear mounted taperturning attachment.
