Uertical milling, drillíng and boring machines

INTRODUCTION

The Bridgeport milling machine, first designed in 1938 by Magnus Wahlstrom and Rudolph Bannow, introduced a revolutionary concept in milling machines. Originally, they had been building a versatile milling, drilling, and boring head since 1928, which proved to be so adaptable that conventional machines of the time couldn't fully utilize its potential. This led them to design and build a completely new machine.

The Secret

The key innovation of the Bridgeport was its versatility. Unlike traditional machines, the milling head of the Bridgeport could be moved into practically any position relative to the table and workpiece. This capability allowed it to machine areas larger than its own table. Moreover, by rotating the turret through 180 degrees, a second head mounted on the opposite end of the ram could be used. This setup enabled seamless transitions between milling, boring, shaping, slotting, and other operations without disturbing the original setup.

Value for Money

Bridgeport machines were brilliantly conceived and solidly built. Modern large-scale production methods further enhanced their cost-effectiveness. These factors, combined with their tremendous versatility, contributed to making Bridgeport one of the world's most popular milling machines, with production exceeding millions of units. A purpose-built factory in Bridlington, West Humberside, was designed to maximize the benefits of modern flow-line production techniques, ensuring high-quality machine tools at low costs.

### Design Features

The Bridgeport is more than just a milling machine; it's also capable of drilling and boring. Its combination of head, ram, turret, and table movements allows it to handle jobs longer and wider than its own table, and from virtually any angle. With its extensive range of attachments, the Bridgeport can function almost like a complete workshop in itself. This versatility makes it adaptable to changing work requirements, as it can be reconfigured with different attachments as needed.

To ensure maximum strength and rigidity during cutting operations, the Bridgeport features robust construction with major castings and extra-wide slideways. These design elements not only provide years of accurate and economical production but also ensure stability under load.

Overall, the Bridgeport milling machine remains a hallmark of versatility, durability, and cost-effectiveness in the machining industry, continuing to serve various manufacturing needs with its adaptable design and robust performance.

Type J Head

The Bridgeport milling machine, initially designed in 1938 by Magnus Wahlstrom and Rudolph Bannow, has become renowned for its robust design, versatility, and wide-ranging capabilities in machining, drilling, and boring. Here’s a breakdown of its key features and options:

 Choice of Milling Heads

Both the Bridgeport Type J and 2J2 milling heads are capable of handling heavy cuts efficiently due to their high-quality components and precise assembly:

Type J Head: Equipped with a 1.5-2 kW motor, providing 15 spindle speeds ranging from 67 to 4600 RPM.

Type 2J2 Head Features infinitely variable spindle speeds from 50 to 3750 RPM, powered by a 1 kW motor.

Quill

- The quill is hard chrome plated, accurately ground, and lapped to fit the honed bore in the main casting.
- It features sensitive hand feed lever and slow feed handwheel, detachable for operator convenience.
- Offers three rates of power feed in both directions with an adjustable micrometer stop for precise depth control.
- A positive quill clamp design prevents over-tightening and distortion, with a slipping clutch mechanism to protect against overload.

Spindle

- Uses the R8 spindle taper, allowing for interchangeability with a wide range of spindle tooling.
- The R8 taper minimizes the distance between the spindle bearings and the cutter, enhancing precision.
- Includes a quick-acting spindle brake for easy tool changes, which can be locked for safety during operation.

Belt Housing and Motor Support

- The belt housing and motor support can swivel through 360 degrees, enabling flexible positioning of the milling head.
- This feature allows the head to be used in positions where the housing or support might otherwise obstruct.

Reverse Flow Air Cooling

- The Type 2J2 head incorporates a unique air cooling system that keeps heat buildup in the spindle bearings, belt, and quill area to a minimum.
- Air is drawn into the housing and past the spindle bearings by the drive belt, then exhausted at the top, maintaining operating temperatures close to ambient.
- This system enhances belt and bearing life while preserving machining accuracy.

Type E Slotting and Shaping Head Option

- Mounted on the rear of the ram, the Type E head is designed for slotting and shaping operations.
- It features a swiveling turret for quick positioning and can operate vertically or at any angle.
- Driven by its own 1/4 kW motor, it offers six rates of oscillation and adjustable stroke from 3 to 100 mm.
- Capabilities include vertical or horizontal tool mounting with a clapper box for tool relief.

bridgeport Unit Heads

- The Type J, 2J2, and E heads, due to their independent motor drive, can be used not only on Bridgeport machines but also on other conventional milling machines and special-purpose tools.

Versatility and Applications

- The Bridgeport milling machine excels in craftsmanship, versatility, and value for money, supported by comprehensive after-sales service.
- Its ability to handle large jobs exceeding the table size and perform operations from various angles makes it suitable for diverse applications in toolrooms, production, maintenance workshops, and educational institutions worldwide.

The Bridgeport remains a benchmark in milling machine technology, combining innovation, durability, and adaptability to meet evolving manufacturing needs across industries.

Accuracy and Design Features of the Bridgeport Milling Machine

The Bridgeport milling machine is celebrated for its precision engineering and robust design, incorporating several key features that enhance accuracy, ease of operation, and longevity.

 Vee Slides

Design: Vee slideways on the outer faces provide a broad bearing area, proven effective over more than 30 years for this type and size of machine.
Gib Strip Adjustment: A single adjustment of the gib strip accommodates wear in both planes, ensuring a precise fit without needing to remove plates for machining. This design minimizes vibration and wear, maximizing sensitivity and rigidity.
Centralized Cross Screw: Positioned centrally between symmetric slideways, it balances thrust evenly, preventing imbalances that could cause cross slide crabbing.

Ram Clamp

- The ram operates on vee slideways and moves via a rack and pinion mechanism for accurate positioning.
- Patented method of ram clamping expands the ram into the slideways on top of the turret, enhancing rigidity and reducing vibration.

Ease of Operation

Centralized Lubrication: A standard centralized lubrication system oils slideways, leadscrews, and knee elevating mechanism with a single lever operation. This ensures proper lubrication distribution, reducing maintenance and enhancing operator convenience.
