METAL REMOVE
The Bridgeport Series One is a míllíng, drilling and boring machíne that, with the combínation of head, ram, turret and table movements, can machíne a workpiece longer and wider than its own table and from any angle.
With the extensive range of attachments available, the machine caп virtually become a workshop in itself and can readily accommodate changes in type of work.
Maximum strength and rigídity under cut is ensured by the robust
constructíon of the major castings, extra wide slideways, twin knee/column locks and twin table/saddle locks, giving years of accurate and economical production.
The Bridgeport Series One universal turret milling machine is a classíc in its own right and with over 1 million produced to date, ít ís unquestionably the world s most popular milling machine.
Fífty years unrivalled expeńence in turret mill manufacture combined with continuous development ensures the very best value for money in quality, performance and reliability.

The original Bridgeport turret mill was desígned in 1938 by Magnus Wahlstrom and Rudolph Bannow, two Swedish engineers líving in America.
They found that conventional machines could not utilize the full capabilíties of the míllíng,
drilling and boríng head which they had been buílding since 1928. Their new design provided a totally new concept in milling machines.
The versatílity of thís new machíne allowed the milling head to be moved into practically any position relative to the table and workpíece. Not only could it machine an area larger than the table, but by rotating the head through 180 , a second head mounted on the opposite end of the ram could be used. This permitted the milling and boring operations to be followed by haping and slotting etc., without dísturbíng the original set-up.
It was a brílliant concept and this versatílíty has remaíned one of the hallmarks of the Brídgeport Series One.
For certain photographs in thís /eaf/et, the machíne cutter guard  has been removed to present the applicatíon with greater claríty.
Cutter guards musł be fitted at all times when the machine is in operation.

STANDARD DEMONSTRATION CUT
The standard demonstration cut of the Bridgeport Seríes One BR2J2 is:
Metal removal volume 28 cu. cros/min 1 /8 cu. ins/min
Material 30 ton/tensile mild steel
Cutter 4 tooth end mill
spindle speed 1200 гpm
Feed rate 75mm/min 3 /min
Depth of cut 25mm 1
Width of cut 15mm 5/8
Type 2J2 Head
TOUGHER THAN YOU THINK MILLING HEADS
The very high quality of the component parts and assembly procedures enables extraordinarily heavy cuts to be made in relation to the power supplied. The type 2J2 milling head is powered by a 2 /akW 3hp motor with infinitely varíable spindle speeds from 50 to 3750 rpm, whilst the 3/a-1 /2kW 1-2hp motor of the Type J heads provídesl5 changes of speed ín the range 67 to 4600 rpm.
GIUILL
The quill is hard chrome plated, accurately ground and lapped to fit the honed bore іп the main casting. The sensítíve hand feed lever and slow feed handwheel aгe readily detachabie for operator convenience. There are three rates of power feed in both
directions.
Maximum productivity is assisted by a quick release depth stop for adjustíng quill depth. When setting the feed disengagement position for accurate boring and míllíng operations, the micro-adjuster can be moved rapidiy to the approxímate position followed by minimal adjustment for fine posítioníng.
The design of the positive quill clamp prevents over-tightening and risk of quill distortion, while a slipping clutch mechanism provides protection from overload.

AIR EXHAUST BELT HOUSING MOTOR AIR INLET

BELT HOUSING AND MOTOR SUPPORT REVERSE FLOW AIR COOLING
The belt housing and motor support may be swívelled through The uníque and patented air cooling system of the 2J2 head
360 , enabling the head to be used ín posítíonswherethe housíng ensures that the heat build-up in the spindle bearings, belt and or support might otherwise foul. quil is kept to an absolute minímum. This is achieved by the air being drawn ínto the housing past the spindle bearings by the rotation of the drive belt and fínally emitted out of the exhaust at
the top. Distortion is avoided by maintaining the operating temperature to wíthín 11 C 20 F of ambient, resulting in íncreased belt and bearíng lífe and maintained accuracy.
SPINDLE AND R8 TAPER
The R8 spíndle taper was specially designed for the Bridgeport Seríes One and facílitates the ínterchangeability of a wide range of spíndle toolíng. It ís now accepted as a standard by leading spindle and tool chuck manufacturers all over the world.
The majority of the work carríed out on the Series One is end míllíng usíng collets, which with the R8 taper can be located dírectly ínto the spindle nose. Thís reduces the distance between the spíndle bearing and the end of the cutter to a mínimum.
The quíck actíng spindle brake may be locked on to facilítate rapid tool changíng.
SUPERIOR DESIGN ;
RAM CLAMP
The ram runs in vee slídeways and is moved backwards and forwards through a rack and pinion mechanism to enable accurate positioning. The Bridgeport patented method of clampíng the ram ; is to expand the гam into the slideways on top of the turret. Thís method gives a wider area of contact for a very rigid joínt, so increasing stitfness and reducing vibration.
CENTRALISED LUBRICATION
Correct lubrication gives longer accurate life to the machine, reducing maintenance and making the machine more sensitive and easier for the operator to work. A centralised system lubricates slideways, leadscrews and the bevel gears of the knee elevating mechanism. Operation by a single lever saves the operator time and makes ít easy to give each moving part the correct amount of oil, pre-determined by a series of ineteríng
valves built into the system.
HARD CHROME SLIDEWAY OPTI0N
The manufacturing specification includes the option of hard chrome plated slídeways to give extra years of accurate life. The specíal Poeton-Tibon precísion process enables the hand scraped slideway to be hard chrome plated to a uniform thickness of approximately The surfaces plated are:
1. Top of cross slide - longitudinal movement.
2. Top of knee - cross movement.
3. Cross slide to table gib.
Poeton chrome plating becomes an integral part of the base casting and sínce heat is not involved in the process, it causes no stresses or strains. The slightly porous deposit provides an idea lubricant absorbing surface with an extremely low co-effícient of friction and also gives corrosion resístance to the slideways.
Hardness exceeds Rockwell , giving outstandíng wear qualities.
SUPERIOR CAPACITY
CAPACITY
The highly successful Bridgeportconcept of utilizing the combined movements of table cross-slide, ram and turret, allows a component considerably larger than íts own table to be machíned without the necessity of costly re-setting procedures. The Series One table
síze of 1065mmx 230mm 42 x 9 has proved to be more than adequate for a vast number of jobs that might otherwise have required a consíderably larger and more expensive machine.
BRIDGEPORT UN1T HEADS .
Ѕ Whilst the Type J , 2J2 and E heads are primaríly íntended for use on the Brídgeport machine, their independent motor drive 1828 makes them suitable for use on other conventional milling machines and special purpose tools.

The clapper box can be locked when not hp motor, it has síx rates of oscillatíon from 60-350 strokes required. Capacity for horízontally mounted tools is 9mm з/8 per minute. The stroke is adjustable from 3-100mm in 3mm steps and for vertically mounted tools is 15mm 5/8 .
