Butler Precision Toolroom Slotting Machines
Two sizes of Butler Precision Toolroom Slotting Machines are available with 8- and 12-stroke options. Both machines have the same design for the drive and feed motion and are fitted with a tilting ram, with the degree of tilt varying for each model. The design of the table controls on the larger machine is modified to ensure that the hand wheels are within easy reach of the operator, particularly when two feeds need to be used simultaneously during profiling.

Each machine can be equipped with an optional dividing head rotary table, as shown, available as an extra.

The table traverse is guaranteed to a maximum error of 0.0005.

8-Stroke Precision Slotter

The drive for the Precision Slotter, as illustrated, is common to both models of the Precision Toolroom Slotter. It is transmitted through enclosed vee ropes via a clutch with a built-in brake to a gearbox. The gears are made of heat-treated nickel-chrome steel. A single helical stroke wheel transmits the drive through a bronze die to a slotted link, which incorporates the ram balance.

The stroke length can be adjusted while the ram is in motion or at rest from the squared shaft, with the stroke amount indicated on the concentric dial.

Slotting Machines

A tilting table can be fitted in place of the standard table on all machines. The table can be tilted up to 5 degrees and secured in any desired position. A wide range of toolholders is available to meet the customer’s specific requirements.

High Production Slotters

The drive, as illustrated in the photographs below, is used in all sizes of Butler High Production Slotters. The drive is taken from an electric motor mounted on a welded steel bracket at the rear of the machine and transmitted via vee ropes to a six-speed gearbox with sliding gears mounted on splined shafts. The power is then transferred to twin driving wheels mounted in large diameter bearings on each side of the machine's body.

Two eccentric discs are fitted in each wheel, securely locked in place by three bolts. One of these bolts passes through both wheels and carries the phosphor-bronze driving block. To adjust the stroke, the three bolts are released, and the wheels are rotated by pushing an inch button on the pendant. This causes the discs to slip, varying the eccentricity of the driving block and consequently the length of the stroke.

A cast steel stroke link and ram connecting link transmit power to the ram. The system is designed so that the ram connecting link is always pulling down throughout the cutting stroke, ensuring an extremely smooth and powerful cut.
