PUMA 400 Series Design and Features

45-Degree Slant Bed Design

The PUMA 400 series features a true 45-degree slant bed design, which enhances the overall machine performance and ease of operation. The bed is a one-piece casting, which includes both the saddle and tailstock guideways in the same plane. This alignment helps eliminate thermal distortion during operation, contributing to high accuracy and stability.

Guideways: The guideways are of the wide, wrap-around rectangular type, ensuring long-term rigidity and precision. They are spaced widely to provide maximum stability and protection.

Material: Fine grain Meehanite processed cast iron is used due to its excellent dampening characteristics. This material prevents deformation even under heavy cutting conditions.

Torque Tube: A heavily ribbed torque tube design prevents twisting and deformation, further reinforcing the machine’s rigidity.

High-Rigidity and Tool Inspection

The slant angle design allows for easy tool loading, changing, and inspection. Additionally, the guideways are induction hardened and precision ground. A fluoroplastic resin, Rulon 142, is bonded to the mating surfaces of the ways to enhance wear and friction characteristics, followed by hand scraping for a perfect fit and precise center height.

Meehanite Cast Headstock

The headstock is made of Meehanite cast iron and is ribbed externally to increase its surface area for better heat dissipation. This durable design ensures both rigidity and long-term performance.

Manufacturing and Assembly: Both the headstock and main spindle are manufactured in a temperature-controlled environment to ensure high precision. They are then assembled and tested in a clean room for optimal performance.

High-Torque Spindle Motor

Torque: The powerful 23 kW motor (on the PUMA 400B) provides 1,800 N·m of low-end torque, which enhances the machine’s performance during heavy milling operations.

Spindle Design: The spindle features a cartridge-type design supported by double rows of cylindrical roller bearings at the front and rear. Duplex angular thrust bearings are positioned between the rollers for added rigidity.

Bearing Quality: All spindle bearings are permanently grease-lubricated and are NTN precision class P4 (AFBMA-67).

Spindle Locking and Stabilization

A dual-pressure hydraulic spindle lock is available to hold the spindle in place during heavy milling or when a specific position is required. Additionally, pressure can be applied to stabilize the spindle during contouring milling operations.

VD1 Milling Turret: The VD1 turret design allows tools to be arranged in a manner that clears a 12-inch chuck. The turret disk ensures quick tool setup, and tool holders can be exchanged in seconds. Static tools can be mounted on all 12 stations, while rotating tools can be mounted in 6 of those stations.

Simultaneous Turret Rotation and Clamping: Both turret rotation and clamping are controlled by a high-torque Daikin hydraulic index motor. The rotation and clamping processes happen simultaneously, ensuring efficient tool changes. The turret indexing is bi-directional with the next station ready for indexing in minimal time.
