Giddings&Lewis FT FTR Floor type horizontal boring machine

Giddings&Lewis FT FTR Floor type horizontal boring machine

Modular Design
Two versions of floor-type boring mills are available, the FT and FTR Series. The FT is equipped with a standard boring mill spindle. The FTR adds a ram headstock for extended reach and milling capabilities. The choices do not end at the headstock. The modular design of Giddings & Lewis boring mills offers a wide range of features to tailor the machine to your job. Choose from various tables, floor plates, or auxiliary slides, X and Y axis travels, coolant systems, and attachments, to name a few.

Solid Construction Stands Up to the Toughest Machining Demands Handling parts that can weigh 75 tons and taking deep cuts with 75 kW drive motors requires a machine built with unsurpassed rigidity. A few of the features that make G&L Boring Mills so durable include:
• Cross-ribbed column construction.
• Wide way spreads on column and runway.
• Rigid, ribbed steel fabrication for runways.
• Large preloaded roller guideways with linear scale feedback on X, Y, and W axes.
• Spindle and ram thermal compensation and dynamic ram displacement compensation.
• Preloaded rack and pinion drive for the "X" Axis.

Column Design Maximizes Stiffness
Whether it is the "X" ribbed cast gray iron version of the FT/FTR 3500 or the bulkhead reinforced fabricated construction of the FTR 5000, Giddings & Lewis boring mill columns are designed to resist torsional deflections and minimize vibration.

Operator Platform
The operator platform is mounted on a slide and travels with the column in the X-axis direction. A sliding door provides access to the work area. The control may be repositioned within the cabinet for optimal viewing of the control and cutting operations. A steeply sloped roof prevents chip accumulation. The clear windows of the upper enclosure let in light, allow full viewing of machine operations, and provide protection from chips.

High-Performance Drive/Way System
• All Giddings & Lewis boring mills use a proven way
system with hardened and ground preloaded roller
guideways. The roller guideways reduce friction, allowing
faster traverse rates, up to 20 m/min. The design of the
roller packs optimizes way surface contact and rigidity.
• Hydraulically-preloaded ballscrews provide superior axis
stiffness via constant preload which is unaffected by heat.
• Large zero-backlash ballscrews supply smooth axis
motion and high thrust performance. The stiffness of the
larger screws enhances load carrying capacity.
• The special geared AC digital drives maintain high torque and impressive stiffness even at high traverse speeds and feed rates.
• The X axis is driven by an electronically preloaded rack
and pinion system.
• Digital servo drives are sized to handle the headstock positioning and weight influences.
• Unsurpassed positioning accuracy is provided by the standard linear scale feedback system.
Bidirectional positioning accuracy: 0.015 mm
Bidirectional repeatability: 0.008 mm

Ram or Spindle Headstock
The FT is equipped with a live spindle. The FTR version has a collinear ram in addition to the live spindle. Fabricated from cast steel, the ram adds rigidity for machining operations requiring extended W-axis reach. The ram also provides an adjustable mounting platform for a variety of attachments. For each of the floor-type HBM models, there is a choice of headstocks.

Versatile Live Spindle
• The live spindle is a programmable axis for drilling and tapping as well as adding reach for boring operations.
• The infinitely-variable spindle drive provides optimal cutting speed, tool life, and part finish.
• The Z-axis extension capabilities of a live spindle allow the use of standard, shorter tools which can reduce tooling costs. Shorter tools also improve the spindle's cutting abilities.
• Turning, facing, and contour boring operations are also possible. Contouring heads or feedout tools when used with the live spindle will reduce setups and improve cycle times.
• Standard high-pressure coolant through-the-spindle assists with cutting and chip evacuation.

Hydra-Rib® Improves Performance Standard on the four-speed headstocks and the 155/180 mm two-speed headstocks, the Hydra-Rib variable preload taper roller bearings offer high rigidity at low speeds. At higher speeds, the preload automatically decreases to reduce heat in the bearing, resulting in greater thermal stability and longer bearing life.

Exclusive Spindle Growth Compensation
• Z and W-axis thermal compensation software dynamically offsets spindle and ram growth, maintaining tight accuracies.
• Algorithms control spindle gauge line variation to less than 0.050 mm deviation over an average eight-hour cycle.

Hydro-Dynamic Damping
For operations that require heavy milling at extended reaches, the Hydro-Dynamic Damping System option is recommended. This system, developed by Giddings & Lewis, is as effective as a full hydrostatic way system at a fraction of the cost. Hydraulically-actuated dampers provide dynamic stiffness to extend the effective cutting range of the ram.

Dynamic Ram Displacement Comp System
Angular ram displacement resulting from variations in ram extension and variable attachment weights is mitigated using a hydraulically-actuated tension rod system. Forces applied to the tension rods are adjustable to counteract the static loads of attachments and dynamic to correct for the natural effects of ram extension.

Tables/Floor Plates/Auxiliary Slides
A variety of part mounting options are available for use with G&L boring mills.
• Rotary tables for reduced setups and machining on multiple sides.
• Floor plates for extremely long or cumbersome parts.
• Auxiliary slides capable of feeding the parts to the spindle.
• Auxiliary slides with rotary tables facilitate the machining of multiple sides of long unwieldy parts. The options listed above may be used in various combinations.

Maintenance-Friendly Services Area
Fluid levels, gauges, and maintenance functions are clearly marked and centralized on one floor-level panel.

Choice of High-Performance Control
All control choices include: fast Ethernet connection, rigid tapping, high-level programming capabilities, interior lighting for control cabinets, and remote hand-held pendant with MPG (manual pulse generator).
