Giddings&Lewis VTC Vertical turning machine

Giddings&Lewis VTC Vertical turning machine

The robust design of our machines offers first-class cutting capabilities. With features such as a hydrostatic ram, linear scale leveling, high-capacity table design, and heavy-duty roller guideway system, we produce a rigid and precise machine tool.

Our machines can be configured to meet customers' requirements. Choices include controls, column heights, and tables, as well as options such as live spindles, 4th axis, pallet shuttle, and large capacity tool magazines.

The hydrostatic ram offers high dynamic stiffness and damping, allowing for heavy cuts and producing better finishes with greater accuracy.

• The headstock is a rigid and thermally-symmetrical one-piece casting.

• Featuring a large 250 mm square ram capable of 75 kW or 108 kW cuts and able to reach into 324 mm minimum bore diameters.

The hydraulic actuation of the cross slide elevation and clamping system is simple, safe, and accurate.

- An infinite number of cross slide positions are available. The adjustable cross slide accommodates parts of varying height while minimizing ram extension.
- An absolute linear feedback system provides immediate machine referencing and eliminates the need for limit switches.
- Hydraulic cylinder elevation with secure mechanical clamping, 1,000 kN per side.
- Precision cross slide leveling with standard linear scale feedback.

The way system features heavy-duty, size 65, linear roller bearing carriages that ride on hardened and ground guideways. This rigid, low-friction system supports high loads and enables fast 20 m/min traverse speeds.

The fast, high-capacity table bearing features table speeds up to 500 min-1. Its combination of angular and roller thrust bearing design minimizes part deflection and provides superior load carrying capacity. Additionally, it includes a two-speed transmission with a 4:1 gear ratio.

The large swing capacity and ergonomic access features include a range of 1,700 mm to 3,700 mm maximum swing, providing ample space for various parts. Wide operator access to parts is ensured, and all enclosures allow easy crane loading of parts. Additionally, convenient tool loading and servicing are facilitated with the toolchanger installed at floor level.

Full X-axis travel allows for cutting from both sides of the center and probing diameters with complete X-axis travel left and right of center. This capability optimizes part processing time by allowing cutting from both sides, as longer time is spent in the cut, reducing the need for frequent tool changes.

The Giddings & Lewis WedgeLock System accommodates standard industry retention systems and modular tools, thereby reducing tooling costs.
- Its large gauge diameter ensures optimal taper contact and allows for the use of long tools, up to 700 mm in length.
- Standard provision for coolant through-the-tool is included.

Standard on the machine is a floor-mounted, 26-position tool storage disk. If additional tool storage is needed, a chain-type magazine can be added.

The versatile live spindle option enhances machining versatility. It allows for milling, drilling, and tapping both vertically and horizontally using the live spindle or right-angle live spindle attachments.

Controls Choices
Choice of control SIEMENS SINUMERIK 840D
or GE Fanuc 16i.

Performance and convenience-enhancing features include:

- Centralized services for simplified maintenance: Gauges and fluid levels are positioned on one well-marked floor level service panel, making monitoring and maintenance easy.

- Standard side-discharge chip conveyor minimizes floor space requirements, keeping the workspace organized and efficient.

- Coolant system with 40 bar pressure and a 950-liter tank provides clean coolant to the tool tip, ensuring optimal cooling and lubrication during machining operations while optimizing chip evacuation for improved efficiency.

4-Axis Version:
The four-axis model boasts two heads and two rams, enabling simultaneous cutting of large-diameter parts such as bearings, disks, and pulleys.

- Roughing with one head while finishing with the other.
- Capable of performing OD and ID cutting simultaneously.
- Two 26-position tool changers are included, one for each head, ensuring efficient tool management and uninterrupted machining operations.

C-Axis:
Drill and mill turn a variety of features anywhere on a workpiece with the 360,000 position full contouring/positioning table.

Expanded Tool Magazine:
For operations requiring more than 26 tools, a chain-type magazine is available, increasing capacities to 68, 108 or 208 tools. Any tool in the extended tool magazine may be used vertically or horizontally in a right angle head.

Palette Shuttle Adds Productivity:
For higher volume jobs, pallet shuttle systems allow operators to set up additional parts while the machine is cutting.
• Equipped with one rotating load/unload station.
• Available with one or two park stands.

Too1 Probe
Tool probes íncrease machine utílízation and
provide precísíon from the fírst cut. The tool
probe corrects and modífíes tool lenqths. Tools
caп be qualífíed to 0,050 mm.

Part Probe:
The part probe updates offsets and measures surfaces, diameters, lengths, and angles to ensure part quality.
Probing on both sides of center provides up to four times the probe accuracy compared to probing the radius.

Enclosure Options:
Enclosure options are available from the standard to the fully enclosed. Both enclosures meet CE requirements.
