2. General Information:
By following the mounting instructions, the measuring system can be easily installed and set into operation. However, if required, installation at the customer's expense can be carried out by contacting the appropriate Heidenhain supplier or service engineers. If the equipment becomes defective and cannot be repaired by the customer, returning the equipment to the factory in Traunreut is recommended. Depending on the nature of the damage, repairs are carried out either free of charge within the conditions of the guarantee or at the customer's expense.

Do not engage or disengage any connectors while the equipment is under power! The transport protection clamps should only be removed during the mounting procedure (refer to paragraph 4.2.5., page 5).

3. Operating Principle:
The scanning head mounting block is connected to the scanning carriage via a special coupling. The scanning carriage is guided along the glass scale. The light from the long-life lamp passes through the light-transmitting zones of the incremental scale and onto the solar cells aligned with the scanning windows. Relative movement of the scanning head to the scale produces light-dark variations, which are converted into sinusoidal signals by the solar cells. Further processing of these signals is carried out within the HEIDENHAIN-counter electronics.

LS 803, LS 803 D, LS 903 are equipped with two absolute reference markings which enable re-establishing the reference datum after operational interruptions. A special design with one reference marking at any position within the measuring length is also available.

4. Mounting Instructions

4.1. Mounting Attitudes:
LS 803, LS 803 D, LS 903 is splash-waterproof when mounted in the following attitudes, provided that sealing lips are not directly exposed to fluids.

4. Mounting Instructions

4.1. Mounting Attitudes:
Other attitudes offer only insufficient protection from contamination and should therefore be avoided.

4.2. Installation:

   4.2.1. Prepare Mounting Surfaces:
      - The surfaces must be free from paint.
      - Parallel tolerance between mounting surfaces and machine guide: 0.02 mm.
      - For measuring lengths exceeding 620 mm, a 20 mm wide non-greasy surface with a clearance of 0.2 mm to 0.5 mm to the scale unit should be provided. This surface should extend over the total height of the measuring unit, and be located at the midpoint between mounting surfaces. It will be used for final cementing of the transducer with epoxy resin adhesive (e.g., UHU-Plus).

4.2.2. Mark Position and Fixing Holes:
      - Mark the position of M4 fixing holes for the scale unit. Drill, tap (min. 10 mm deep), deburr, and remove swarf.

4.2.3. Prepare Mounting Surfaces for Scanning Head:
      - The surfaces must be free from paint.
      - Parallel tolerance between mounting surfaces for scanning head and machine guide: 0.1 mm.
      - Parallel tolerance of mounting surface for scanning head and right-angle tolerance of mounting surface for scale unit: 0.05 mm. Distance between mounting surface for scanning head and mounting surfaces C for scale unit

4.2.4. Mark Position of Fixing Holes:
   - Mark the position of fixing holes (ø 4.5 for mounting possibilities 1b, 11b, 111b, IVb, Va, Vb) and tapped fixing holes (M4, for mounting possibilities 1a, 11a, 111a, IVa) for the scanning head. Drill, tap, deburr, and remove swarf. The spacing between the two fixing holes:
     - Mounting possibilities 1 to IV: 56 ± 4 mm
     - Distance between fixing holes of the scanning head and fixing bolts of the scale unit: 25.5 ± 2.5 mm. Alignment of both holes to machine guide: 0.2 mm
     - V: 74 ± 0.2 mm
     - Distance between the two holes and mounting surface for scale unit:
        - for Va: 3.7 ± 0.2 mm or 12.7 ± 0.2 mm
        - for Vb: 3.5 ± 0.3 mm or 12.5 ± 0.3 mm

4.2.5. Remove Transport Protection Clamps:
   - Caution! Do not attempt to turn the scanning head by force, this can cause damage to the inner coupling.

4.2.6. Secure Scale Unit:
   - Lightly secure the scale unit with two M4 x 20 DIN 912 screws.

4.2.7. Secure Scanning Head:
   - Lightly secure the scanning head to mounting surface E or H, using M4 screws.

4.2.8. Alignment:
   - Align the scale unit and scanning head so that a clearance of 1 ± 0.3 mm is maintained over the entire measuring range, with surface G' of the scale unit being parallel to the machine guide to within 0.3 mm and the scanning head being parallel to the machine guide to within 0.1 mm.

4.2.9. Tighten Fixing Screws:
   - Tighten fixing screws for the scale unit and scanning head (torque: 2.5 Nm or 25 cm kg).

4.2.10. For Measuring Lengths Exceeding 620 mm Only:
   - At the midpoint of the transducer between surface D and the scale unit, affix a non-greasy metal foil which is 0.1 to 0.2 mm thinner than the clearance of the cementing gap, using epoxy resin adhesive.

4.2.11. For LS 803 Special Design with Flange Socket Only:
   - Secure the flange socket at a suitable location near the scanning head with the two M4 screws (see Mounting dimensions page 20). Note the maximum length of cable between the scanning head and flange socket: 300 mm. The scanning head and flange socket must be secured to the same machine part.

4.2.12. Check Mounting Tolerances and Functioning of the System:
   - After installation, verify that all mounting tolerances are within specified limits and ensure proper functioning of the system.
