HURON GRAFFENSTADEN has developed the SX range of milling machines to meet the demand for profitable production processes. These milling machines in the SX range integrate advancements in information processing technologies, transforming them into intelligent production systems. Available in various sizes, the SX range offers two versions: the SXB featuring the HuRoN universal milling head, and the SXD equipped with an automatically positioned milling head.

The SX range solidifies HURON GRAFFENSTADEN's position as a leader in ergonomics and safety, offering large capacity milling machines that are easy to operate and prioritize safety. It embodies the qualities that have established HURON GRAFFENSTADEN's reputation, including sturdiness, reliability, high precision, and adaptable flexibility.

The main unit structures are made of high-quality cast iron, providing maximum rigidity to the machine. The monoblock fixed bed assembly offers a sizable foundation for the table along the longitudinal X axis. The vertical slide, supporting the ram, moves up and down the column along the vertical Z axis. The ram, crafted from spheroidal graphite cast iron without openings, ensures cross movement (Y axis) with high resistance to torque and deflection effects caused by cutting forces.

Combining travel along the longitudinal axis with the cross and vertical travel of the ram enables the execution of numerous machining tasks at high levels of component production.

A control system governs the axes independently. The X-Y-Z linear axes are driven by variable-speed motors, which operate through a reducer and a high-precision ball screw. This setup allows for infinite CNC-operated feed variation for all movements, eliminating the need for intermediate mechanical ranges of steps.

Slides and Guides:
All axes feature parallelepipedal slides. These slides are integral, crafted from cast iron, ground on the bed and column, and consist of ground tempered steel inserts on the ram. Metal scrapers and telescopic guards provide protection for the slides on the X and Z axes. The guides for the three movements are well-dimensioned and covered by synthetic anti-friction plates. This design reduces the friction coefficient, enhancing the efficiency of the feeding sequence.

Tables:
The SX's tables are tailored for machining large components and can handle loads of up to 7,500 kg. Four table sizes are available:
- SX 523: 1600 x 700 mm
- SX 633: 2000 x 920 mm
- SX 733: 2400 x 920 mm
- SX 833: 3000 x 920 mm

Optional safeguards are designed to optimize safety and operator protection, comprising three sliding doors made of Makrolon panels.

There are two models of spindle heads available:

1. SXB Model:
   - Features a manually oriented universal head with a vertical slide and a 45-degree slide, enabling infinitely variable spindle positions.
   - Particularly suitable for work on tooling, molds, or complex one-piece components.
   - The spindle drive is provided through 2 pairs of spiral-tapered Gleason pinions, which are largely covered to limit noise.

2. SXD Model:
   - Equipped with an automatic head featuring 2 orientation planes:
     - 2 positions in the Y-Z plane (horizontal and vertical positions)
     - 73 positions between -90 degrees and +90 degrees in the X-Z plane, achieved through a Hirth front-toothed crown wheel.

PATENTED HURON SYSTEMS

The ISOCLINE and ISOPRESS systems address important issues during the transverse movements of the ram. The center of gravity of the ram generates significant torque variation, transmitted to the machine frame by the slides, potentially causing rocking within the limits of their play and column bending.

The ISOCLINE system compensates for these phenomena, while the ISOPRESS system compensates for the variation in pressure exerted on the ram's slides. It ensures the straightness of the ram's transverse movement throughout its entire travel, suppressing the rocking effect regardless of the ram's position. These two patented systems from HURON provide the ram with movement straight to within less than 15 microns over all travel distances.

Additionally, the accuracy of axis movements is enhanced by employing direct-measuring linear scales with a resolution of 1 micron. For the Y axis, accuracy is further improved by using an Invar bar, which neutralizes any interference caused by expansion.

THE OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES

The Integrated Tool Magazine:
With a capacity of 8 tools, this detachable device is designed to fit seamlessly as a table end. Equipped with a disc magazine, it meets modern machining demands. Tool exchange is directly managed by the milling head, with positions controlled by the component program.

The Automatic Tool Changer:
This self-contained system comes with either an 18-tool drum magazine or a 40-tool chain magazine. Tool replacement is executed using a pincer arm, with each tool identified by its specific location.

Additional Index Plates:
Controlled by the CNC system of the machine, various types of index plates are available to meet specific requirements:
- Rotating plates with horizontal or vertical axes (4th axis)
- Rotating and swiveling plates (4th and 5th axis)
