Today, gun drills or BTA drilling tools with carbide cutting edges are used for deep-hole drilling operations. GUN Drilling Method ELB In the gun drilling process, the coolant is conducted under pressure to the tip of the drill through a bore in the shaft. The chips are then transported, together with the cooling oil, through the groove along the outside of the shaft. The advantage of this method is that several tube plates can be drilled together as a stacked, since the internal cooling oil supply causes no loss of pressure. Carbide-tipped gun drill with internal cooling oil feed and external chip and cooling oil return BTA Drilling Method In contrast to the gun drilling method, BTA drilling tools operate with external cooling oil supply and internal chip and cooling oil return. The cooling oil is conducted under pressure between the drilling tube and the wall of the hole to the tip of the drill and returns carrying the chips through the inside of the drilling tube. Contact between the surface being drilled and the returning chips is thereby prevented, enabling a high surface finish quality to be produced. Thanks to its single-cut BTA drilling head with disposable carbide tips, external cooling oil supply, extreme rigidity, the drilling tube, and internal chip and cooling oil return, permits very high drilling capacities to be achieved. 4 Cooling Oil Supply and Return During Deep Hole Drilling For the BTA method, drilling oil feed or supply units E30ZA are required to supply the cooling oil. During gun drillings, the BOZA also effects the disposal of the cutting chips. For both methods, the BOZA has a common body KOM6I--BOIA . This machine body incorporates the diameter-dependent drilling tube guide and the drilling bush. The KOMB1-BOZA is mounted on the guide slide of the deep-hole drilling unit. A hydraulic cylinder in the drilling bush holder seals the KOMBI BOZA against the workpiece. The drive of the tool in the drilling spindle is effected by Ø chucking shaft and driving pin during gun drilling and by a collet chuck BTA drilling: BTA Drilling Method

Technical Characteristics of the HTB Horizontal Deep-Hole Drilling Machine

Machine Construction The machine is constructed on the basis of a boring mill. The carrier X-axis supports the column and moves transversely to the workpiece by means of a hydrostatic-type guide. The narrow guide of the slide is located in the middle of the carrier with hardened guide gibs and roller elements. The feed drive is supplied by a DC servo motor and a double pinion drive. The drilling slide Y-axis performs the vertical movements, powered by a DC servo motor and ball screw drive, and also supports the guides of the drilling units Z-axis. The Y and Z-axes have flat guides coated with slideway lining in conjunction with hardened guide gibs and roller elements.

Deep-Hole Drilling Unit Depending on the drilling capacity required, the machine can be supplied with one, two, or three-spindle vertical arranged drilling units. Each spindle has an independent DC main drive and a separate DC feed drive via a ball screw, and can therefore be operated individually or in groups. For machining bigger holes, the lower unit on three-spindle deep-hole drilling machines is designed as the main spindle and has a higher drive output. In order to increase the productivity of the machine, the spindle spacing is adjustable via motors. Adjustment of the spindle spacing is effected according to spacing blocks. The X, Y, and Z axes of the machine are each under CNC control. A platform connected to the drilling slide serves as the operating or control point from which all setting-up, operating, and controlling operations are in addition to deep-hole drilling, conventional drilling, thread cutting, chamfering, groove milling, and milling operations can be performed on the machine.

Special Designs Deep-drilling machines with horizontal spindle configurations are used for machining tube-shaped collectors. In such cases, the holes are located around the perimeter of the collectors, which is the reason why they have to be held in a controlled indexing device with outboard tailstock. These machines can, of course, also be used for machining tube plates.

Cooling oil supply System Pump tanks with a corresponding capacity form the basis for a satisfactory supply of cooling oil and reliable cooling. The cooling oil and the chips pass through telescopic tubes into the collector troughs in the base of the machine. The drilling chips are extracted from the oil circuit using paper band filters. A cooling oil recycling centrifuge is integrated into the automatic chip disposal system.

Safety Monitoring Systems In order to detect malfunctions, e.g., a worn tool or a chip blockage, in time to avoid damage, the machines are equipped with extensive safety monitoring systems. The torque, power consumption of the feed motor, and drilling oil pressure of each spindle are monitored. If the preset values are exceeded, an acoustic alarm sounds. The spindle affected returns to its initial position while the other spindles complete their drilling cycle. Another major safety system is the position monitoring system which operates independently of the CNC control of the X and Y axes. The drilling command is given only when the values input via the CNC system correspond to the values stored in the position monitoring system. As a result, any positioning faults due to programming errors can be avoided.

Technical Characteristics of the MPN Multi-spindle Floor Type Drilling Machine

Thin-walled tube plates and stacked plates with large numbers of drilling holes are processed on vertical floor-type drilling machines with 8 or 12 spindles. Twist drills with external coolant feed, carbide-tipped twist or two-lip drills as cooling channel drills with internal coolant feed as well as counterboring, chamfering, reaming, and groove milling tools can be used. Machine Construction The machine is of bridge-type design with a cross-rail and two lateral pillars. The machine traverses on guide beds over the workpiece which is clamped to a large fixed table. The bridge is guided on the beds X-axis and the drilling head on the cross-rail Y-axis via roller elements with hardened guide gibs. The X-axis is driven synchronously by two DC motors via double pinion drives and racks, whilst the drive for the Y-axis comes from a DC motor and ball screws. The machine has CNC control for the X, Y, and Z-axes.
