The lap plate is surrounded by an epoxy finished worktable, which is simply adjusted using four screws to compensate for wear of the lap plate, ensuring that the plate's sharp edge is not exposed. Components to be lapped are located in workholders or appropriate fixtures. The Model 15 is ideally suited for lapping either small quantities or high output production runs. Large parts of cylindrical shape can be substituted for the rings. Rotation of the electrical supply workpieces and conditioning rings or maintenance facilities the unit can be used to relap worn parts, reducing costs and minimizing scrap. Valve bodies, discs, gears, vanes, valve plates, and mechanical shaft seals are just a few of the many components which can be lapped to meet the original manufacturers' specifications.

For most applications, the workholder is a disc of resin-bonded material of the appropriate thickness, slightly smaller than the of the ring. It has a number of apertures cut out, similar to the shape of the parts, but with clearance. The underside of the workholder is faced with small metal discs so that it does not touch the plate surface.
