A Rígid Structure Buí1t Upon Basíc Desígn Concepts
One of the most critical elements in machining accuracy and capacity is the rigidity of the machine's body. The SV series was designed according to the principles of Finite Element Method. FEM provides a símulation of stresses that occur in the machine's
casting when placed under a load. Refinements were made ín areas such as bed thickness, rib shape and ríb positíon to improve stiffness. These refinements gíve the machines a high level of resistance against distortíon. While increasing the strength of the casting, we were able to reduce the weight.

A Generous Machíníng Envelope, In A Compact Unit
One objective of design was take advantage of all available space. We have preserved a generous machining envelope, while at the same time
reducing the machíne's footprint. Ample strokes have been províded: 600 mm (23.6 in.) for the Xaxis, 430 mm (16.9 in.) for the Y-axìs, and 460 mm
(18.1 ín.) for the Z-axis on the SV-400; on the SV500, these figures are 800 mm (31.5 in.)* For the X-axis, 510 mm (20.1 in.) for the Y-axís, and 510
mm (20.1 in.) for the Z-axís.

A Powerlui Spiпdle for Stable, Hígh-Speed Cutting
High-speed, High-Output Dírect Dríve Spíndle Motor
The spíndle drive system uses gearless direct drive spindle (DDS) motor to deliver cutting power throughout awide rangeofspeeds. The large-diameterspindle
bearings use ceramics ba11s to increase rigidity and help deliver a maximum speed of 12,000 min 1 on the SV-400 and 10,000 min' on the SV-500/40. The dual winding
motor further increases speed and torque. This motor adds power for everything from high-speed machining to heavy cutting. Adirect
synchronous sensor (DSS) and dígital controls enable us to fully synchronize spindle rotation speed and Z-axis feed, thus allowing high-speed synchronized tapping operations.

Reduces Non-Cuttíng Time
The spindle motor has been desígned to provide quick starts and stops, as well as to provide increased RPM. The SV-500/40 accelerates from an at rest
position to maximum rotatìon in an amazing 1.5 seconds. This aids minimizing time out of the cut.

The SV-400's oíl-air spíndle lubrícatíon system is outstandíng in íts abílity to prolong bearing lífe. The oil supplied is exactly the correct amount thus reducíng the effects of friction. The cooling effect of the oil-air mixture holds temperature increases to a
mínimum during hígh-speed rotation. An oil cooler is used to further minímíze thermal dístortion of the spíndle.

SV-500
Mori Seiki's uníque micro-fog lubrícatíon is used on the SV-500 to supply a continuous míst of super-fíne lubricating oil to the bearings. This not only sígnificantly íncreases coolíng capacity, it enables stabilized hígh-speed performance. The aír purge effect of the system works to prevent contaminants from entering the spíndle. The system also reduces
the amount of oil needed for lubrication, thus requíring wíth less energy and lower operatíng costs.

Non-Cutting Tímes

A 1260 inch per minute rapíd feed rate slashes non-cuttíng tímes.
Fast pítch ball screws, with leads of up to 0.63 in. (16 mm)*, and high speed servo motors are used for the X-, Y-, and Z-axis to deliver a rapid feed rate of 1,260 ipm (32 m/min) and cutting feeds of 630 ipm (16 m/min). The guide ways are ultra-high load type ball guides, providing stable cutting capabilities even during heavy cutting.

Tool-to-Tool Change Speed of 1 Second
A unìque ATC cam mechanism is used to achieve a tool-to-tool time of 0.9 seconds for both the SV-400 and 500/40. Spindle acceleration and deceleration times have also been shortened, so that chip-to-chip time on the SV-400 is 2.8 seconds* and 3.1 seconds* on the SV-500/40.

Desígned for Operability
Top covers have been installed for the sliding portions of the X- and Y-axis to eliminate problems caused by chip buildup. Full covers are provided as standard equipment to contain chips and coolant within the
machining area. Full consideration has been given to operational ease and safety issues. The results are improvement in both the work environment and the efficiency of the operators.

To simplify operations inside the machine, the table has been located in front of the
operation point. On the SV-500, the distance from the front edge of the machine to the
table has been shortened to 205 mm (8.1 in.).

A two-level sliding door has been used for the front door on the SV-500. Wide access makes it easy for loading and unloading of workpieces, machine setup and maintenance.

Considerable attention was given to the crítical íssues concerníng operator safety. Various devices are íncluded as standard safety features. Door lock devíce, door interlocks, full covers, warning labels, main breaker interlocks, etc.

High Maintainability
The lubrication unit, oil cooler, and other components that requìre daily maintenance
have been centralized on the side of the machine to simplify procedures.

10 percent faster than conventional machínes
As part of our performance testing, we compared the SV-500/40 against conventional machines. The part at the right was machined using the same program and the
results are impressive: non-cutting time for the SV-500/40 was 26 percent faster and total
processing time 10 percent faster than the conventional machine.

Look Ahead Control Delívers Accurate Hígh Speed, Hígh Effícíency Cutting
Look Ahead Control Features Maíntaín Accuracy During Hígh-Speed Machíníng.
Standard Look Ahead Controls make it possible to obtain dimensional accuracy during high-speed machining. While conventional machines are forced to reduce cutting speeds to hold dimensional accuracy, the SV-500 with Look Ahead Controls dramatically increase machining capability.

Look Ahead Controls -
Due to the processing speed of current control systems, delays are generated between the reading of a command in a control
and the actual movement of the machine axis. These implementation delays cause deterioration in the dímensíonal accuracy of
the part and geometric problems in corner sections, ares and contour surfaces. Look Ahead controls were developed to
overcome these problems. Look Ahead controls consist of five different functions.
■ Look Ahead Feed Fonvard
Commands are issued from the control by anticipating where there will be delays between the issuance of a CNC command and the actual movement of the axes.
■ Automatíc Comer Deceleratíon
Decelerates the feedrate just prior to reaching a corner during highspeed machining to maintain the highest possible feedrate without causing excessive mechanical stress to the machine or its components.
■ Arc Radíus Feedrate Límít
Limits the maximum feedrate of the cutter so axis acceleration wíll not exceed a pre-established fıxed value to reduce any mechanical stress to the machine or its components.

■ Pre-lnterpolatíon Línear Acceleration/Deceleratìon
Sets the linear acceleration or deceleration proportional to the time remaining prior to the start of interpolation.
■ Post-lnterpolatíon Acceleratíon/Deceleration sets linear acceleration or deceleration proportional to the time after interpolation.

64-Bίt R1SC Processínq
Normal CNC circuits are extremely complex and limits the control processing speed. To avoid these processing limits, we use
the method known as 64-bit R1SC processing. In 64-bit processing, frequently used instructions are bypassed to R1SC circuits allowing the internal CNC processing speed of the remaining commands to be increased.
