The Double Column Vertical Boring are heavy machine tools designed for machining large metal workpieces by rough and finish turning of external, internal and face diameters. With the use of special equipment it is possible to cut metric and inch threads with the vertical saddle, to turn tapers by combined feeds with the vertical saddle. The Vertical Boring Mill, is built in one height version which allows for machining workpieces of 1250 mm max. height over the table. The Vertical Boring Mіll, type is built in three versions differing in height, viz. standard version for machining workpieces of 1850 mm max. height over the table heightened version for machining workpieces of 2150 mm max. height over the table high version for machining workpieces of 2500 mm max. height over the table. The Vertical Boring Mill, type KCF 400, is built in four versions differing in height, viz. standard version for machining workpieces of 1850 mm max. height over the table heightened version for machining workpieces of 2150 mm max. height over the table high version for machining workpieces of 2500 mm max. height over the table special version for machining workpieces of 3500 mm max. height over the table. The Vertical Boring Mills, types are double column machines, built either with two crossrail saddles only or with two crossrail saddles and one side saddle. The crossrail is arranged sliding on ways of the columns. The feed motion of the saddle, and their rams is derived from a separate feed gearbox for each saddle, these gearboxes being connected kinematically with the main drive. The traverse motions of the saddles and their rams are operated by separate electric motors secured to each of the feed gearboxes. The wide kinematic characteristics of these machines, their compact and rigid construction, the judicious table bearing arrangement, the application of antifriction bearings for all shafts, the automatically operated multipoint clamping arrangement of the crossrail combine to provide for high efficiency of rough machining operations and high precision of finishing. Owing to centralized control of motions, remotely controlled preselection of table speed changes, interlocks, and limit switches the operating of the machine is easy and safe. Long time precision and reliability in operation is ensured through the possibility of eliminating play and dead motions.

The Vertical Boring Mills
have two vertical column connected at the bottom with the machine bed, and at the top by the cross beam.
According to the height version the machines are fitted with additional cross beams. These elements form thus a rigid frame structure.
Machine bed
Purposeful design and robust ribbing of the machine bed form a stout binding element for columns and main drive, provide for correct transmission of the drive and rotary motion of the table, damp possible vibration, and ensure accurate operation. The bed carries flat guide ways for the table. The main drive unit is secured to the machine bed.

Owing to its suitable design, strong ribbing and high quality material the table warrants reliable and rigid mounting of the workpiece. The table rests on flat guideways and is mounted on a long spindle
that is carried in two special double row cylindrical roller bearings. Radial play in these bearings, developing after a long time of service, can be adjusted by expanding the
inner taper ring of each bearing. According to the weight of the workpiece the guideways of the table are relieved by axial antifriction bearings. The table guideways are amply lubricated and cooled by oil. The table is furnished with four adjustable chucking jaws and has additional T slots, arranged radially, for clamping work of irregular shapes
CoIumns and cross beam
The sturdily ribbed, box shaped columns are of cast iron. At the bottom the columns are secured to the machine bed and to the foundation, where as at the top they are connected through a cross beam. Vertical Boring Mills of the in the high version have two cross beams, and the KCF 400 Boring Mill high version has three cross beams. The columns carry slideways for vertical travel of the crossrail. The R.H. column has additional slideways for the side saddle
Crossrail
The strongly ribbed cast iron crossrail shows the design of a rigid beam of box cross section. The crossrail is traversed vertically along the column slideways by means of two feed screws operated by the crossrail traversing mechanism. On the crossrail slideway, two vertical saddles are arranged and the feed gearboxes are located at the ends of the crossrail. In the crossrail feed screws and feed shafts are carried to provide the feed and traverse motions of the two saddles.
Maіn drive
The main drive transmitted from an electric motor over a V belt drive to the double gearbox of the main drive. These gearboxes transmit the drive to the table through helical bevel gears and super gears. The bodies of the gearboxes are of grey cast iron. The gears are of high grade steel, with teeth heat treated and ground. The main drive provides 18 different speeds. The gears, mounted on spline shafts carried in antifriction bearings, are shiftedin both gearboxes automatically by means of an electro hydraulic preselection mechanism, controlled from
the pendant. The preselection mechanism enables to select, during one operation, the speed required for the next one. Owing to the wide range of available speeds the optimum cutting speeds can be selected to suit the respective type of operation and size of the workpiece.
Breaking of the main drive is by countercurrent from the main drive motor. The clamp іѕ mounted at the rear side of the crossrail. These are multipoint, self locking clamps operating automatically. In the KCF 200 machine the clamps are operated mechanically, and in the machines hydraulically. The crossrail clamping mechanism is operated by a separate electric motor. This motor is stopped automatically at the moment the crossrail is clamped in position. The feed gearboxes provide 12 different feed rates for the saddles and their rams in each direction. The feed drive is derived from the main drive, transmitted through intermediate feed gearboxes located on the columns, and the feed gearboxes for the vertical saddles mounted at the crossrail ends for vertical saddle. The feed gearbox for the side saddle is mounted directly on this saddle. All shafts in the gearboxes are carried in antifriction bearings, and the gear teeth are hardened by
H.F. currents and ground. To protect the mechanisms against damage through overloads the feed gearboxes have incorporated overload clutches. Each feed gearbox has a separate electrical motor and a multiplate clutch for the rapid traverse motion which can be engaged while the machine is operating at feed speed. The machine is equipped with two vertical saddles mounted on the
crossrail. As extra equipment a side saddle may be fitted.
Each saddle has separate drives for feed and traverse motions and can also be moved by hand through a ratchet mechanism. The crossrail R.H. saddle is for roughing and the L.H. saddle for finishing operations. These two saddles can be swivelled through 300 to either side from the vertical axis. The saddles can be operated separately as well as conjointly. With the use of special equipment both metric and inch threads can be cut with the R.H. saddle, and the L.H. saddle can be used for turning tapers by combined feeds. The rams are of cross section. The slide surfaces of the rams are surface hardened. Since the rams are relieved, their vertical travel movement is very smooth and wear of the drive elements is negligible. In their extreme positions the saddles and rams are protected by limit switches. The saddles are fitted with toolholders which allow for horizontal as well as vertical mounting of tools. As extra equipment the saddles can be fitted further the crossrail R.H. saddle and the side saddle with turrets for multiple operation jobs, the crossrail R.H. saddle with a threading tool holder. The toolholders are mounted in taper seats in the saddle rams. The controls for the table drive, crossrail traverse and clamping, saddle feeds and rapid traverse are located on the control pendant. The speeds and direction of feed and traverse motions are preset by means of levers located on the respective feed gearboxes. On the control pendant an emergency push button is installed for immediate stopping and braking of the main drive motor and the whole machine. The emergency push button is easily distinguished by its shape and colour. Elements of the control gear are accommodated in a free standing control cabinet. The motions of all moving assemblies are limited by limit switches. The electrical equipment is normally arranged for 380 V working voltage, 220 V control voltage and 50 frequency. Upon previous agreement this equipment may be adapted to suit the User's electric supply. The machine main frame, the gearboxes of the main drive and the intermediate gearboxes have forced feed lubrication provided by a separate gear pump. The feed gearboxes are lubricated each by a separate pump. The slideways of crossrail and vertical saddles are lubrícated automatically from special tanks. The remaining assemblies of the machine are running in oil baths or lubricated by hand, by means of a grease gun.
Description of special equipment
The turret is used with the crossrail R.H. saddle and with the side saddle. It is designed for multiple operation jobs. In this turret the position of the tool is changed by rotating the head by hand about the horizontal axis. The thread cutting tool holder enableѕ to carry out all operations connected with the cutting of threads without moving the saddle. This toolholder is used with the crossrail R.H. saddle. The thread cutting attachment for the crossrail R.H. saddle enables to cut 17 metric pitch threads with pitches ranging from 2 to 20 m m, and 12 inch threads ranging from. The taper turning attachment for turning by combined feeds enables to turn tapers with the crossrail L.H. saddle. In this way 9 types of taper can be turned with apex half angles ranging from.
