A team of application experts are available worldwide to provide an appropriate laser solution or to develop new applications. In addition, collaboration with leading laser institutes guarantees ROFIN is always up to date in all important areas of application. The successful industrial use of laser systems is based on a variety of additional factors. Economic viability, high machine availability, and long maintenance intervals are important criteria. In this context, ROFIN'S diffusion cooled lasers with their characteristic high beam quality, combined with minimal gas consumption, low operating expenses and long term cost of ownership, are clearly an excellent choice.
impossible? Not at all! Many customers frequently require special solutions to be developed to address new applications. ROFIN has decades long experience with specialpurpose machine construction and successful cooperation with a variety of custom machine building companies. This results in cost effective and successful implementation to suit the needs of such customers.
Highly automated production processes require reliable system solutions systems that can cope with a wide variety of different parts and can also monitor the quality of the processed result. Thus, laser based system solutions by ROFIN are delivered with powerful software which may, utilize vision systems for part identification, orientation, and often verification of quality of the lase processed components. Lasers that aгe used as cutting and welding tools have become indispensable for general
machine construction. There is hardly a sector today where lasers are not successfully proving their value, offering a variety of benefits in industrial production. Thanks to clean cut edges, reliable weld seams and flexible guidance systems, high power lasers supplied
by the ROFIN Macro Group have conquered a considerable market share, especially in sheet metal processing. The processing spectrum ranges from laser cutting of flat metal sheets with a thickness of

25 mm, welding of heat exchangers or kitchen sinks to the processing of pipes and profiles. Since the laser process is very easily automated, intelligent system solutions typically possess integrated process sensors, thus allowing online quality control of the laser welds.
Beam sources with increasingly high output power and noticeably improved beam quality in combination with easy programming have continuously enhanced the range of applications in this industrial sector. Lasers have turned into black boxes. Many machine manufacturers are integrating lasers into standard machines, where they are appreciated because of their high reliability.
Apart from steel, a variety of different materials, such as aluminum, glass, ceramics, paper, wood, textiles, and even plastics lend themselves to laser processing. The long list of nonmetallic applications for lasers includes wood cutting for dіe board construction and the cutting of Plexiglas plates for decorative purposes. Since the early 1980s, the automotive industry has been one of the driving forces behind innovative high power laser applications. This industrial segment has stringent
requirements regarding the quality and reliability of beam sources. In conjunction with cutting, welding and marking, lasers offer considerable benefits compared to conventional techniques. lmproved flexibility and ease of automation, meet the central requirements of this sector.
The first lasers were used to weld simple cylindrical parts, such as the components of an automatic transmission. The use of a CO2 laser, and minimized distortion allowing highly compact and affordable gear trains. Today, lasers are used to process complete vehicle bodies. Roof seam, door welding, three dimensional cutting of hydroformed parts, annealing of door springs, marking of day & night panels are only a few examples out of a wide range of applications. The benefits of laser technology, however, frequently allow novel and more efficient production techniques. A good example of this is welding metals of different thickness and quality to assemble tailored blanks. These reduce the amount of material needed while simultaneously enhancing structural rigidity compared to conventional steel sheets, thus reducing vehicle body weights. Ultimately, the use of lasers has had a beneficial effect on fuel consumption.
Laser beam sources, are not alone at the center of attention. New solutions in laser system technology are constantly required, opening up new avenues of machine design and contributing to cost reduction in the face of continuously increasing competition. This is exemplified by the Remote Welding System using CO2 lasers a high speed system allowing highly flexible processing in a large working area. This approach may be used, to quickly and in expensively weld passenger car doors that are clamped only once in various different positions.
Laser marking also offers a number of intelligent system solutions. The list includes special purpose label markers for production lines, creating individual time and location specific identification plates. The compact turnkey systems are equipped with all necessary components to individually mark the foil very quickly and also cut the contours. Since the introduction of the transistor in 1947, semiconductors have steadily gained importance in our lives. Although they are frequently associated with computers and their periphery, these high precision micro processing and storage devices have become established throughout the electronics industry, and we routinely come across them in our daily lives. The small size of these electronic components gives rise to specific requirements regarding manufacturing processes requirements that are easily met by laser materials processing. Laser marking systems from the ROFIN Marking Group, developed specifically for the semi conductor industry, comply with the requirements of this sector. Extremely high marking speeds of up to 1,200 characters per second, at a character height of 1 mm and line widths between 40 and 200 um, can be achieved. Even minute character heights of 0.2 mm that are invisible to the human eye are available in the standard range. Precise laser control and high pulse frequencies allow high contrast marking, at a control lable penetration depth of less than 25 um. These are perfect conditions for marking switching circuits fabricated in resin, plastics, or ceramics. The success story of lasers, however, goes beyond the marking of semiconductor components. For other applications, ROFIN Micro Group offers a wide variety of efficient system solutions, such as the precise
welding of bat teries for cellular phones or the joining of two storage components to a common leadframe. Due to the precision, and the availability of using quick beam deflection systems, lasers also lend themselves very well to the structuring and cutting of surfaces a technique that is already being used with solar cell manufacture. Adding to the three primary markets for laser materials processing are a variety of additional sectors relying on lasers as a production tool. In medical technology, lasers have conquered a wide range of applications over the past few years. A highly successful example from the ROFIN Micro Group pertains to laser micro cutting of stents and medical implants. Today, tube diameters of less than 200 um may be processed with cut widths of less than 20 um. Lasers do not damage the opposite tube wall and allow both radial and non radial cutting angles. This makes it possible to laterally open micro pipes and to cut hollow needle tips. Medical instruments and implants made of titanium and stainless steel are marked with
non corrosive, durable, and biocompatible laser characters. Laser welding of plastics has gained a cosideranle market share in medical technology. This process may be used to create weld seams in close proximity to sensitive electronics parts. lnvisible and therefore aesthetically pleasing joints, are possible,
providing pore free, durable, erosion resistant surfaces after welding. Dental technology offers many areas of application for laser technology. Manually operated welding lasers have gained importance and become indispensable for many applications. lnstead of relying on conventional soldering, with its inevitable difficulties in terms of biocompatibilty due to the use of additives, crowns, bridges, and metal structures are now laser welded. Laser technology has opened up new techniques previously impossible with conventional methods, or that were only accessible with considerable limitations. The applications include titanium processing, which is gaining in importance. This is a material that must be laser welded to achieve high quality joint.
