Farrel 32 grinding machine

Farrel 32 grinding machine

The carriage traverse motor is part of a packaged, individual crowning device. These devices are used, one for each wheel. Change gears are readily accessible, so adjustable voltage DC drive settings can be quickly made. This drive operates from an AC power supply and provides a wide speed range of approximately 20:1, which is essential for this application.

The carriage is a Meehanite metal casting of heavy, rugged design. On the carriage is mounted the swing rest, supported on knife edges of the links. The swing rest carries the two wheel heads and subbases. The carriage is driven by a large-diameter traverse screw located in the center of the bed, engaging a cast-iron nut in the carriage. End thrust is taken by ball bearings at each end of the screw.

The crowning devices are completely contained within the grinding wheel unit. The neck rests, or roll-journal supports, are of the three-bearing type. These rests are carefully machined and assembled to minimize backlash, ensuring a mathematically accurate curve for correct crown shape. Adjustable tripping dogs achieve precise control of the carriage reversal.

A guard made of cold-rolled steel protects the lubrication system from contamination, and the bottom gib carries the weight of the device. Two side gibs steady the roll and provide true bearings. The Farrel crowning devices ensure fixed, uniform, and easily controlled accuracy of contour for all rolls.

Dust Removal Equipment and Foundation Specifications

Dust Removal Equipment

Equipment for dry grinding includes flexible suction hoses, suction boxes, and suction pipes with belt-type covers.

A suitable collector unit can be supplied for installation adjacent to the grinder.

Coolant Filtration

Coolant filters and magnetic drum separators eliminate grit and metallic particles from the coolant, preventing scratches and improving roll finish.

Coolant reservoirs and settling tanks can be built into the foundation, if desired.

Foundation Requirements

Provisions are made for sufficient foundation bolts and leveling screws to provide satisfactory attachment of the machine to the concrete foundation.

A typical foundation plan is provided for each installation and may vary depending on specific requirements.
