How does a honing machine work?
Honing (or pull grinding) is a machining technique. It is used to widen round holes. A grinding device that is suitable for honing is used for this. This grinding device contains two or more honing stones and can be placed in a drill. With the grinding device, small grooves are ground into the wall of a cylindrical inner diameter. This way, the cylinder becomes wider and its shape improves.
During the honing process, honing stones are pushed against the wall of the hole to be honed using a hydraulic or mechanical system. After it's done, the pressure is relieved and the tool is pulled out of the hole.

Honing is done very precisely. Using a honing machine is more accurate than using a regular reamer for enlarging holes. In addition, honing is very suitable to add a certain roughness to the material. The holes can be drilled in almost any material, such as (stainless) steel, cast iron, aluminum, brass, hard steel, hard chrome, ceramic and sprayed coating.
The grooves created by honing are cleverly designed, as they ensure that the grease on the piston ring is brought to a minimum. So, you don't have to worry about the piston getting stuck.
