The Harrison M500 center lathe boasts a swing of 530mm (21 inches) and is powered by a robust 9.2kW (12.5hp) motor. Positioned as the latest and largest addition to the Harrison M series, the M500 is versatile, suitable for various production applications, and well-suited for toolroom and maintenance tasks.

Extensively tested by the M.T.I. R.A., the M500 exhibits the necessary rigidity and power to achieve high rates of metal removal efficiently. It joins the successful Harrison M300 and M400 lathes, completing the new generation of Harrison M series center lathes.

Key features of the Harrison M500 include:

- Spindle speeds ranging from 31 to 1600 rpm
- Powerful 9.2kW (12.5hp) motor
- Universal gearbox offering a comprehensive range of metric and English threads
- No. 8 D1 Camlock spindle nose
- Available in three bed lengths: 1000mm (40 inches), 1500mm (60 inches), and 2000mm (80 inches) between centers, with straight and gap bed versions
- Fully metric throughout, manufactured to ISO/R1708 and BS4656 standards for accuracy testing.

The headstock of the Harrison M500 center lathe offers 18 spindle speeds ranging from 31 to 1600 rpm, with the spindle capable of accepting 80mm (3-1/8 inches) bars. It features Gamet pre-loaded machine tool spindle bearings for stability, along with forward and reverse clutches and a fail-safe electromagnetic brake for safety. Lubrication for the headstock is provided by a separate oil tank.

Headstock controls are ergonomically designed for quick and easy selection of machine functions and settings. Speed selection dials are centrally positioned for rapid adjustment. Main motor, brake, emergency stop, and coolant pump controls are located on a low-voltage pushbutton station mounted on the headstock. Safety measures prevent machine start-up unless the drive clutches are in a neutral position.

The universal gearbox eliminates the need for change gears, offering a comprehensive range of metric and English threads. Threads and feeds are selected via a dial and lever combination, with a torque limiter on the leadscrew. The gearbox includes a low-speed change gear train and feed shaft.

The apron, featuring bevel gears and vee tooth clutches for feed engagement, was specifically designed for the M series lathes. It includes a floating lead nut for threading accuracy and wear reduction, as well as an automatic feed trip with pressure adjustment and overload protection. Apron-mounted controls include feed direction and main stop/start functions, ensuring safety during operation.

Saddle, cross slide, and top slide are equipped with adjustable taper gib strips. A one-shot lubrication system from the apron pump lubricates the saddle and cross slide. The full-length cross slide features a backlash eliminator for easy adjustment.

The bed, with a width over bedways of 360mm (14-1/8 inches) and depth of 380mm (15 inches), is designed with wide vertical ports for efficient swarf clearance. It is bolted onto a full-length heavy gauge steel plinth, ensuring a rigid structure capable of withstanding heavy cutting forces.
