HEDELIUS Machinenfabrik in Meppen, established in 1967, develops and manufactures high-performance vertical CNC moving column machining centers. The extensive equipment range includes three-, four-, and five-axis machines in pendulum and combined designs sold throughout Europe. Customers include machine manufacturers and their component suppliers from agricultural machinery, aerospace, vehicle construction, packaging technology, and many other sectors.

A Success Story
When Werner Hempelmann and Reinold Dettmer joined forces in 1967 to establish HEDELIUS Maschinenbau GmbH for developing and manufacturing woodworking machines, it marked the beginning of a success story in northwest Germany. After relocating to Meppen in Lower Saxony, the founders began developing and producing special machines and machining centers for the metalworking industry as early as 1976. In the second half of the 1980s, Gerhard and Jürgen Hempelmann conceived the idea of producing machining centers in a completely new design. Consequently, they introduced the first moving column machining centers in semi-gantry construction in 1993. These were designed for precise machining of single items and small batch production in the machinery and vehicle construction sector as well as in tool and die making. Since then, operating under the name HEDELIUS Maschinenfabrik GmbH, the company has focused entirely on series production of machining centers. Early on, in 2002 to be precise, the innovative entrepreneurs identified the advantages of 5-axis machining and, before the year was out, they introduced the first series of RotaSwing 5-axis machining centers. Nowadays, the long-established family company with more than 160 highly qualified staff produces state-of-the-art machining centers on a site extending over 12,000 m2 in the northwest of Germany. Thousands of customers from all over Europe rely on the quality promise "Made in Germany - Made by HEDELIUS".

SIMPLY PERFECT
MILLING
The semi-gantry design with its heavy-duty overhead roller guides on the Y-axis is the perfect design
for vertical machining centers. The short flux and the solid machine bed guarantee perfect milling
results. The fixed machine table of grey cast iron is suitable for precise clamping of large and heavy
workpieces. The chips fall from the machine table directly into the chip conveyor located below.
The fact that HEDELIUS machining centers are tailored precisely to the operator's requirements is
demonstrated particularly in the ease with which workpieces can be loaded and unloaded as well
as the ease of setting up and controlling the machine. Every detail is perfectly geared to the efficient
production of single items and small batches.
Efficiency due to pendulum operation
Loading and unloading of workpieces parallel to machining in pendulum operation means optimum utilization of the large x-axis traversing range.
This method increases the machine's output quantity so that cost-effective medium to large batch production is also possible. Combined 3 and 5-axis moving column machining centre RS 605 K20 with permanently installed rotary/tilt table for simultaneous 5-axis machining and integrated zero point clamping system to reduce setup times.

GUARANTEED LONG TERM PRECISION

It's the accuracy that matters. That's why direct NC travel measurement systems with optical scanning, digital drives and stick-slip-free recirculating roller guides work in all linear axes of HEDELIUS machining centres. The tried-and-tested integral CELOX® motor spindles are not just efficient and powerful but also impressive due mainly to their thermostable precision. A hydromechanical tool clamping system guarantees maximum system stiffness and true running quality. Even under extreme conditions.

Wear-free in three-shift operation

HEDELIUS uses state-of-the-art direct drives in the rotary and swivel axes of the 5-axis machining centres of the RS 505, RS 605 and RS 805 range. These torque motors work without mechanical transmission elements and are virtually wear-free. Simultaneous 5-axis machining is already a standard feature. These drives also position the workpiece highly dynamically and noiselessly in the desired angular position.

Thermostable precision: the integral CELOX® motor spindles with hybrid bearing technology

Be it 5-sided machining or simultaneous 5-axis machining - the fluid-cooled direct drives in the rotary and swivel axes of the 5-axis machining centres of the Rs 505, RS 605 and Rs 805 series position the workpiece highly dynamically and wear-free in any angular position.

STRAIGHT TO THE POINT

The set-up times, particularly for the production of single items and small batches, are further minimized by integrating zero point clamping systems in the machine table. As the clamping elements are installed directly in and level with the table, when necessary they can also clamp bulky workpieces using conventional tools with the T-slots present. This means that in each case you are free to choose the best clamping method from a technical and economic point of view.

MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE ON THE WORKPIECE

The performance of HEDELIUS moving column machining centres is substantially enhanced due to the innovative FORMINGSTAR® 3D feed technology. High-end servomotors with obliquely-grooved ring magnets combined with liquid-cooled CELOX® motor spindles ensure even quieter running. Perfect tool quality is achieved due to the scalable path behavior (toolmaking coordination) and direct measuring systems (with glass scales)

SUCCESSFUL, EFFICIENT, ECO

All HEDELIUS machining centres are equipped as standard with the ECO MODE energy-saving function. This means: all standby consumers not required when the machine is idling are optionally switched off either automatically or at the touch of a button. It is enough to simply press the button for the full capacity of the machining centre to be available again within seconds. What sounds simple saves up to 60% of the idling energy and adds up to many hundreds of kilowatt hours a year.

WIDE RANGE OF OPTIONS

HEDELIUS offers a wide range of accessories: automation solutions, NC indexing tables, swiveling frames or probe systems. There's the right solution for (almost) every application. Users appreciate the range of choices and the flexibility offered by the various tool magazines for example. In addition to the standard magazines which have storage spaces for over 20, 30 or 56 tools depending on requirements, HEDELIUS machining centres can also make use of the additional pick-up magazine for angled milling heads or a standby magazine with up to 190 tool spaces.

Standby magazine with up to 190 tool spaces for tool storage. A fully automated pivoting lifting frame with gripper removes the tools from the store and inserts them into the machining centre's magazine. This innovative magazine solution virtually eliminates expensive manual searching and tool changing times.

MILLING AROUND THE CLOCK

HEDELIUS sets the benchmark in automation using tool pallets with the Skyloader pallet storage system. The Skyloader pallet storage systems provide the 5-axis machining centres of the RS range with a fully automated supply of new tools. The large number of tool pallets means that this system can cover breaks or even entire shifts unmanned or lightly manned. Loading and unloading of the tools and pallets is fast and easy thanks to the ergonomically designed and operator-friendly pallet set-up area which is unique in this class. With this system downtimes in the production of batches and recurring parts are a thing of the past.

Optimized chip disposal, high stability and, last but not least, reproducible accuracy are the secret of HEDELIUS automation solutions. The HEDELIUS 5-axis machining centres of the RS range are also the first choice in automation

Unique: the design of the pivotable pallet set-up area of the Skyloader pallet storage system is extremely ergonomic. This makes it far easier for the operator to set up.
