HUGH SMITH ENGINEERING A Division of Qualter Hall Co Ltd VERTICAL PLATE BENDER HORIZONTAL ROLLING MACHINE Introduction to the Vertical Plate Bending Machine The machine operates by a progressive bending method, the plate is fed through a small increment and by means of a reciprocating beam the plate is given a set or bend, and then the plate is fed through for another bend. Once the bending force is applied on the plates, it is not simultaneously being rolled and fed through the machine, therefore a high driving power is not required. This is particularly true of heavy plates where exceptionally high loading or bending effort is required to bend to small diameters in minimum time. It is a characteristic feature of pyramid or pinch rolls that the operation is slowed down considerably when near maximum capacity is being rolled. The greatest loading requirement for bending complete circles is when presetting the extreme ends of the plate. Theoretically it is impossible to bend right to the end, but in practice a very small end flat is left on the plate if adequate hydraulic power can be brought to bear as close to the end of the plate as possible. The lower edge is supported by roller skates running on an accurate floor, which maintains alignment of the plate at all times. Plate thickness variations do not cause the plate to spiral during forming. The weight of the plate has little or no effect on the bending accuracy. Due to the bending nature of the process, it is possible to obtain a true measurement of the radius of curvature after each bend. Operators find this a great advantage. When setting the edges of the plates, the operator can easily see exactly the results of each bend stroke and finely adjust the press stroke to obtain a very accurate shape. Since the plate is supported from the floor, it is safe, and the operator can bend right up to the end of the plate, thus minimizing end flat. By varying the bending bar widths, it is possible, over a large range, to ensure that the bending force used is compatible with the camber compensation on the bending roller, thus ensuring accurate parallel bending.

It is well known that plates vary in thickness over their length and width, and the strength of the material can vary in different parts of the same plate.
