The polishing plate has an aluminum cast alloy base. It is surfaced with a special alloy compound which gives a very high polish and has long-wearing qualities. In order to obtain utmost reflectivity from a lapped surface for light-band interpretation, it is generally required to hand polish parts briefly on either a polishing plate or polishing paper, after work has been lapped. HAND LAPPING PLATES Lapmaster hand lapping plates are of a special alloy which has proper characteristics for low density, long surface wear and lap cutting action. A strong, reinforced cast base furnishes proper support to the alloy lapping surface. Standard serrations are 1/16 wide and are apart. They can be made in special widths for specific applications. These hand lapping plates are extremely useful as an accessory to the Lapmaster or where there are only a few parts to be lapped and the purchase of a machine cannot be justified. They are furnished in standard 6 and 12 diameter sizes, or larger when required for special purposes. BEVELLED EDGE STRAIGHT EDGES Bevelled-edge straight edges, as shown in use on the 12 hand lapping plate at the right, are available for checking flatness of lapping plates. They are available in 12, 24, and 36 lengths. COMPOUNDS AND VEHICLES Since 1937 we have been using lapping machines and lapping compounds in our plants on countless numbers and types of jobs. From these years of experience, we have found that each and every lapping job, particularly production jobs, should be studied carefully to establish the most effective lapping compound. Since a machine is as good as its tools, and lapping compounds are the tools of lap-masters, we have developed a line of standard and semi-standard lapping compounds and vehicles which will ensure the highly efficient operation you can expect from your Lapmaster. Lapmaster compounds range from the coarsest to the finest optical compounds. Granular sizes are microscopically controlled to ensure proper results as to micro-inch surface finish. In actual use, proper proportion of compounds and vehicle are mixed in the agitator tank of the Lapmaster. The powder or compound does the actual cutting of the metal and is controlled by the viscosity of the vehicle in which the compound is suspended. Basically, we have developed two kinds of compounds... hand lapping compounds and those to be used with Lapmasters. The essential difference is that hand lapping compounds are furnished suspended in the vehicle, while Lapmaster compound and vehicle are furnished separately. The hand lapping compound and vehicle mixtures are adaptable to any lapping machine where suspended compound is used... flat hand laps, internal lapping, and roll lapping machines. Compound numbers have been divided into the 1,000 series and the 2,000 series, and the same numbers refer to both Lapmaster and hand lapping compounds. The 1,000 series are all fine finish compounds, while the 2,000 series has been developed for fast stock removal.
