During the 1980s and into the 21st century, Flexible Manufacturing Systems...abbreviated
FMS...will increase in dominance as greater efforts toward satisfying the démands for
diversification and versatility on limited production applications will be ímplemented.
lncorporatíng the latest advancements in microelectronícs, CNC machínes, CAD/CAM Systems (automated designs) and Robotics (material handling equipment) are being combined into sophisticated manufacturing cells. Thís hígher standard ín system performance is being dírected toward full scale Factory Automation (FA).
HN-A series machines are the development of
NIGATA's many years of experience and proven technical know how ín systems engineeríng.
NIGATA incorporates many features to ensure the long-term accuracy and exceptíonal reliability necessary to effectively meet the requirements of an FMs.
NIGATA machining centers are being interfaced with robots, unattended carts or pallet carriers, equipped wíth cuttíng monitoring and measuring systems and coupled together along an optical data highway to achieve the desired
degree of automation.

Full Power Machiníng wíth Hígh Power Spindle Motor
HN-A series machines are offered with spindle drive systems to 25 HP. The modern two range headstock transmits maximum power to the cutting tool. This simple system contains only three rotating members with no clutches for high performance and reliability. The large diameter spindle incorporates two sets of double roller bearings and a set of super precision
angular contact ball bearíngs. A wide bearing span maintains the highest possible alígnment accuracy and rigídity.
Substantial Machine Constructíon
HN-A series machines feature column traverse for z axis. This design enchances machining capabilities for heavy drilling and milling operations by eliminating the inherent weakness of the compound slide in table and saddle type machines. The table (x axis) is fully supported over the full length of travel with no over hang. The result is heavier machíníng ability with better long-lived accuracy. Niigata Machining Centers incorporate the same type double column and single piece head design employed on the most accurate jig boring equipment.
High Precision lndexing Table
DC servo provides fast bi-directional table index. The large diameter curvic coupling affords extremely accurate table indexing to 6 are second TIR. The rugged table slide fully
supports the index table with no overhang. This design assures no table deflection or positioning errors caused by large offcentered workparts or heavy cutting loads. A 360,000 position
4th axis with continuous path milling ability is available as an option.
High Precísíon Positíoníng
Machine slides are driven by powerful DC servos directly coupled to large diameter ball screws for optimum response, excellent positioning accuracy and high reliability. Large
diameter ball screws are generously supported at both ends and centrally located between wide spaced hardened and ground ways to elïminate possible skewing errors. Special
fluorine resin is bonded to moving slides to minimize stick slip friction, increase vibration dampening characteristics and
further enhance the machine's accuracy.
Thermal Displacement System Stabilizes Machining
Accuracy
Grease lubrication controls éxćeśs heat and minimized thermal diśplacement at the spindle. The relative position of the spindle, bearing housing and bearings were strategically designed to eliminate undesirable heat effects and growth. A recirculating oil-type spindle cooling unit further increases the machine's stability on both high and low speed applications. The center spindlé type symmetric design was adopted for its resistance
against thermal deformation. The spindle sleeve negates
thermal displacement on z axis. All thermal sources such as motors and oilhydraulic equipment are located outside the machine body to further increase machining accuracy.

Expandable ATC
A 30 tool capacity ATC wíth random tool selection is standard equípment on HN-A series machíning centers- An intermedíate exchange arm permits preselection of the next tool duríng the cutting cycle to minimize tool change times. Tool changes are
accomplished in 5 seconds. Expanded tool magazines with capacities of 40, 60, 90 or 120 tools are also available. The optional expanded tool systems can substantially íncrease
machíne productívíty. Permanent toolíng setup enables multiple workpart machíníng without loss of productíon tíme for tool changeover or setup and ís ideally suíted for unmanned
machining operations.
Safe and Reliable ATC
The ATC is set at the right síde of the column separate from the machine body and away from the machiníng area. The tool storage location increases accessíbílíty for tool inspection and greatly facílítates tool loadíng and unloading operations.
Ready position of the next tool is also at the ríght síde of the
column to eliminate any possible interferance between tool and high workparts.
No Effect on Machining Accuracy by ATC Movement
A uníque feature of NIGATA Machiníng Centers ís the installation of the automatic tool change system separate from the machine body. Movement of the ATC and tool magazine
during machiníng operations has no effect on machining accuracy. An air cleaning system incorporated around the spindle taper further increases tool locating accuracy. Tools
aгe mounted horizontally ín the tool storage magazíne to prevent chíps from collecting ín tool pockets.
Centralized Control Panel
Operator controls are located close to the spindle for good tool visibílity. This greatly facilitates set up and tape prove out operations. A CRT display ís standard equipment. In
addition, checking devíces and monitoring indicators are also located at the same operator station. lndividual operation panels for ATC and APC are also available.
Table Height
Height from floor surface to table top is approximately 1,000 mm (39 ínches). This permits ease of loading and unloading of workpieces. Easy access to the area from spindle
to table center results ín convenient set up of angle plates, other fixtures and tool layout for small workpiece machiníng.
Column Side ATC
Location of tool storage magazine away from the machining area permits efficíent loadíng of heavy tools during machining
cycle. This side mount construction provides excellent tool visibility for detection of tool wear or breakage without interruptíon of machining cycle.
Rotary Type APC
The automatic pallet changer is a rotary type with open construction for good accessibility to all. sides of work fixtures.
Loading and unloadíng of workparts is accomplished during part machining cycle for optimum productivity.
Micro Computer lnterface
A built in micro computer, programmable sequence controller eliminates conventional contact relay circuits to increase system reliability
and maintainability.
Self Diagnosis Function detects Malfunction lmmediately
Self diagnosis function is standard equipment on this machine. If a malfunction occurs, details are detected and checked immédiately resultíng in a remarkable reduction of down tíme.
Self Diagnosis Function: Malfunction occurs input/output number, showing the ćause of trouble, is indicated.
1/0 Ćheck: ON/OFF states of all input/output signals of sequencer can be recognized with LED readout.
CPU Memory Check: CPU memory is also checked by LED for
any abnormalities.
Easy Maíntenance
Spindle motor, other motors and oil hydraulic equipment are located
outside of machine for easy accessibility, for examination or for any required maintenance.
Abnormality 1 and ícation and interlock
A centralized lubrication system provides positive lubrication to moving
machine members.
Any system malfunction is immediately diagnosed and indicated.
Machínìng cycle is then stopped after completion of block in progress.
Additional system ínterlocks for table clamp and unclamp tool changer, table index, etc. are also incorporated as standand equipment.
Chíps and Coolant Disposal
Chips drop into the trench beneath the cutting area and are
automatically removed from the machine by the spiral conveyor set inside the trench. Slideways are protected from chíps and coolant by steel telescoping covers. Table and spindle head are also protected from coolant penetration by special technology.
The full enclosure-type splash guard with automatíc shutter
prevents chips and coolant from beíng scattered outside the machíning area.
Space-Saving Desígn
This machíne desígn, íncorporatíng a compact arrangement of electríc control panel, operatíon panel and NC unit, requíres a mínímal floor space. A small effícient hydraulic drive system further reduces space requirements and noise abatement.
A power saving circuit is also provided. By attaching an automatic power breaker, this círcuit can cut off electric power automatically when the machiníng cycle ís fíníshed.
