The main characteristic of these machines is the bed design. Thanks to its 3-slideway configuration, with a double way in the center, the machine has finally four bedways, enabling the complete machining of the workpiece without having to continually remove and reposition the steady rests. This configuration, together with the modular design of the subassemblies and the wide range of accessories available, makes the lathes Mod. HD/3 real lean turning centres, able to machine a great variety of workpieces in small lots with high production and accuracy.

Another important and significant feature of the machines shown in this catalogue is the unlimited longitudinal stroke of the saddle credited to the rack and pinion transmission system. The high feed forces associated with these heavy-duty lathes require a reduction of the specific pressure between rack and pinion, up to minimum values. The use of the vertical rack accomplishes this function because the rack itself can be properly dimensioned. The rack fitted on the front side of the bed in a vertical position instead of the usual position under the front slideway allows the pinion to have support bearings at both the top and the bottom to prevent bending or deflection under the maximum load.

Automatic tool changer both for turning and milling is available. The carriage comes with a four-position electric square turret, which can be equipped with a milling and drilling device to be mounted from time to time in place of a turning tool holder. Upon request, the carriage can be equipped with a horizontal rotating disc turret, either in a turning-only version, a turning-milling version, or a turning-milling-grinding version. The HD/3 Series 90-105 lathes are also available in the ST1 self-teaching configuration. The machines are designed strictly as conventional lathes, easy to use, and equipped with a smart display that allows every single operation to be memorized in a cycle. Additionally, complex operations such as turning conical, circular, chamfering, cylindrical, or conical threads can be carried out quickly and easily, without prior knowledge of CNC programming languages.
