INTRODUCTION NORTH-EY ROAD WORKS FOLESHILL The range of Vertical Boring and Turning Mills described on the following pages has been designed with two main objects in view. To meet the need for a general-purpose machine of medium weight and power, capable of utilizing the most modern cutting tools, and to produce such a machine at the lowest possible cost compatible with the high standard which this Company has always maintained. This type of machine must be speedy, rigid, economical in power, and easily operated. These requirements have been met by the extensive use of ball and roller bear- ings, ground gears on solid splined shafts, adequate distribution of metal in castings, with careful design and grouping of controls. They have been made possible by a searching analysis of each detail from a production point of view, by designing to use common parts and units whenever possible throughout the range and by the use of a comprehensive set of jigs, tools, and gauges. No money has been wasted on features whose only value is Sales talk or fashion. Every feature is of real practical value and is based largely on the result of our own experience with this type of machine. The design provides for building each machine to give any one of four different speed ranges: Normal, High, Special High, and Low. In addition, for 48 and 60 machines, a Special Heavy-Duty Drive is available. The normal range is satisfactory for most work. The low speed and special heavy-duty drive are recommended for work on high tensile steel forgings, etc., where machining allowances may be large and irregular. The high-speed ranges are recommended for non-ferrous metals and light castings. It should be noted that the high-speed ranges are obtained without objectionable speed-up in gear ratios, and the low speed and special heavy- duty drive without dropping the pulley speed. With the advent of Tungsten Carbide Cutting Tools, it has become increasingly evident that greater consideration must be given to the simplicity of Machine Tool Control to obtain maximum efficiency. With this foremost in our minds, the development of the Hydraulic Control, which is now standard on all our range of machines, has provided a considerable reduction in operating fatigue. This, and other noteworthy features, are adequately described in the following pages. We offer these machines with full confidence that they represent the most modern design and best investment for users. Guards are arranged with detachable portions for cleaning and can be supplied for single or Duplex Mills. Return channels on this type of Cutting Coolant System, which are permanent, are required to be included in the concrete foundation. HIGH POWER VERTICAL BORING AND TURNING MILLS Series 'DH' CUTTING COOLANT SYSTEM TRAY TYPE, consisting of suitable motor pump with switch, coolant tray, checker plates, pipes and guards. Guards are arranged with detachable portions for cleaning and can be supplied for Single or Duplex Mills. This type of Cutting Coolant System is more convenient in cases where machines may not be permanently situated. POWER TRAVERSE AND THE REVERSE MOVEMENT OF BOTH. THE MAIN DRIVING CLUTCH, multiplate lubricated type is hydraulically operated having no toggles or levers and is self-adjusting to take up wear throughout the life of the plates. In operation, a four-inch lever mounted on ball bearings needs only finger and thumb pressures to start or stop the machine. A LOCKHEED BRAKE similar to that satisfactorily fitted for many years is now operated from the main pump without inter- vening master cylinder, thus simplifying the mechanism and making the brake self-compensating for wear. THE 12 SPEED CHANGES effected by sliding gears, are selected by rotating a dial inscribed with the speed rates until the required speed figure is opposite a pointer. The whole of the speed range is visible and the selection is direct reading. The speed change is interlocked with the brake and dialing cannot take place while the clutch is engaged. An important device patent applied for is incorporated in the speed change mechanism which ensures a positive gear change and prevents the machine being started if the gears are not correctly meshed. Should the gears at rest be so opposed that a tooth is opposite a tooth, the device automatically comes into operation, partially rotating the gears until a space is opposite a tooth and the change effected. This eliminates the difficulty experienced at times in hand changing sliding gears. The one dial replaces three long hand levers previously fitted for speed changes, thus time and effort is thereby saved. THE 12 FEED CHANGES are effected by sliding dog clutches of alloy steel in combination with a freewheel. Feed rate changes may be made while the machine is running by rotating a direct reading dial similar to that provided for the speed change. Similarly, the one dial replaces three hand levers previously fitted to the feed change, thus time and effort is again saved in this direction. SELECTIONS OF FEED OR RAPID POWER TRAVERSE are operated by a short lever mounted on ball bearings. The feed is engaged by a toothed clutch and the rapid power traverse by a hydraulically operated, self-adjusting, dry plate clutch. The control is interlocked to prevent feed and rapid power traverse being engaged simultaneously. The feed or rapid power traverse reverse is effected by a hardened tooth clutch. The selecting lever is spring-loaded so that the rapid power traverse is automatically disengaged when the hand is removed. ALL THE CONTROLS are conveniently grouped on a panel of neat design, thus obtaining a very high degree of centralization. In this manner, every opportunity is afforded an operator to maintain a higher output. THE HYDRAULIC PRESSURE is provided by a well-designed gear pump situated for easy access in the clutch and pulley box. The stuffing gland of the pump is submerged in oil to obviate air leaks in the suction circuit should wear take place on the gland. This pump also provides lubricant for the machine bearings on a low pressure circuit. TWO PRESSURE GAUGES are provided, one for the lubrication and the other for the hydraulic control circuits. Adequate filters are provided on the suction side of the pump and these, together with the pressure regulators, are situated inside the column of the machine. Access to these for cleaning or adjusting is by a hinged cover on the oil filler box. Page 13 LEADING FEATURES AND SPECIFICATION A COLUMN. In one piece with base for rigidity. B DRIVE. Motor drive by vee belts through multiplate lubricated clutch and geared transmission. C SPEEDS. Twelve speeds in geometrical progression controlled by Direct Reading Dials. Sliding gears interlocked with driving clutch and hydraulically operated internal expanding brake self-compensating for wear. D FEEDS. Twelve positive feeds operate in vertical, horizontal, and angular directions. They are reversible and interlocked, controlled by Direct Reading Dials. A shearing pin is fitted to prevent damage through overload. E CHUCK. Has four hardened, independent and reversible jaws mounted on slippers and actuated by protected screws. This design avoids the need of screw cutting the jaws and is a distinct advantage when special jaws are required. It is driven by high tensile steel gear and pinion, the latter hardened and ground. The chuck is supported on a large diameter thrust track running in an oil bath. A reversing motion is fitted to the left-hand chuck spindle of Duplex Machines when fitted with normal speed range only. F SPINDLE. The chuck spindle is made from a steel forging. The spindle is of the hollow type which allows pilot bars to be used and facilitates the removal of swarf. G TURRET. The pentagonal turret is made from a steel forging. The faces are machined and bored in position and provided with tapped holes for attaching toolholders and special tools. The turret holes are gauge size and fitted with quick-acting positive grip for boring bars, etc. A geared arrangement facilitates indexing by hand. The turret is fitted with an extremely powerful and efficient locking arrangement which will retain its accuracy indefinitely, and binds the turret solid with the slide over its entire base. H SLIDES. Narrow guides to all slides. Retainers cast integral with guideways. Adjustment provided by taper gibs. J SWIVELING HEAD is positive and actuated by suitable gearing on the saddle of the machine. K RAPID POWER TRAVERSE. Available in all directions, interlocked with the feeds and controlled by a combined feed and rapid power traverse lever. The drive is by a small independent motor, and is protected against obstruction by a safety clutch. L HAND ADJUSTMENT. Tool adjustment is made by handwheels and dials calibrated in thousandths. Scales are fitted to turret slide and cross slide and graduated to read 1/16. Dials and scales are fitted with adjustable pointers. Metric scales can be supplied. M GEARS. All gears are of steel or phosphor bronze. Speed gears are of nickel chrome steel oil hardened to 461 Brinell and tooth form ground. N SHAFTS. All main drive shafts and most secondary shafts have solid ground splines. O GROUPED CONTROL. All controls are suitably grouped, giving a very high degree of centralization and reducing operating time and fatigue. P BEARINGS. Ball and roller bearings are fitted throughout transmission. R LUBRICATION. Main bearings, driving gears and gear boxes are automatically lubricated WITH FILTERED OIL from pump. Other bearings and traveling units are lubricated from independent reservoirs. Note the excessive tool overhang B necessary to enable the corner A of the turret to clear the top of the work. A SPECIAL TOOL HOLDER IS AVAILABLE FOR USE WITH THE INTERMEDIATE TURRET POSITION In Fig. 2 the intermediate tool position is shown, the necessary tool overhang now being reduced to the minimum. COVENTRY - ENGLAND AUTO TRIP ELECTRIC The stops on vertical and horizontal rods can be used as trips, or as dead stops for sizing by hand, and permanent collars are fitted to stop rods to act as safety limit switches. DIAL INDICATOR A dial indicator can also be fitted to enable absolute precision in diametral adjustment of tool, independent of spring or backlash in machine details. Complete attachment can be supplied upon request. Page 19 SPECIAL FIDOTATIONS The principal dimensions of these machines have been fixed as a result of many years experience and will generally be found sufficient to accommodate most Vertical Boring and Turning Mill work. It sometimes happens, however, that the odd case requires a slightly larger swing or extra headroom in order to accommodate it on the machine. With this in mind, and to increase the usefulness of these machines, we can arrange, within certain limits, for these occasional requirements. The 36 Vertical Boring and Turning Mill can be supplied in the following form as alternative to standard 1 The standard Mill fitted with 42 faceplate in lieu of chuck for high speed and special high-speed ranges. All 36 machines can be supplied with SPECIAL TALL COLUMNS to increase total headroom distance from chuck or faceplate surface to bottom of cross slide up to 12. Under these conditions, the length of the turret slide will be increased in proportion. The 48 Vertical Boring and Turning Mill can be supplied in the following forms as alternatives to standard 1 The standard Mill fitted with 48 or 52 faceplate in lieu of chuck for high speed and special high-speed ranges. 2 The Mill can be fitted with a special body to give 56 diameter swing and with 54 diameter faceplate in lieu of chuck. This applies to high-speed and special high-speed ranges only. All 48 machines can be supplied with SPECIAL TALL COLUMNS to increase total headroom distance from chuck or faceplate surface to bottom of cross slide up to 14. Under these conditions, the length of the turret slide is increased in proportion. The 60 Vertical Boring and Turning Mill can be supplied in the following forms as alternatives to standard total headroom distance from chuck or faceplate surface to bottom of cross slide up to 14. Under these conditions, the length of the turret slide is increased in proportion. It must not be assumed that Tall Column and Extra Swing alternatives can be combined. All requirements for increased capacity should first be submitted to these Works for approval. Standard machines are capable of very heavy cutting. It should, however, be borne in mind that in all cases where machines are fitted with columns taller than standard a certain loss of rigidity may result. Whilst this may not be serious it is obvious that the extended columns should be kept to a minimum. A RAM HEAD, as illustrated on page 46, can be supplied and fitted in lieu of the Turret Head, and, since the Ram Head is interchangeable with the Turret Head, can be supplied as an extra to be substituted to suit specific requirements. It is sometimes found to be extremely useful in dealing with work subjects of a tall nature where the main operation consists of machining deep bores or turning the outside diameter, as in the case of large cylinders and similar components. SPECIAL TALL JAWS can be supplied to meet cases where it is necessary to support work some distance from the chuck face. We make jaws approximately 4, 6, 8 and 12 tall and these will generally be found to meet most cases. However, the height required for the special jaws must obviously be decided upon when considering the component to be machined. See page 39. FINE FEED RANGES can usually be offered for special work except in cases where Screw Cutting Attachment is required, but requirements should be submitted for confirmation. SPEED RANGES. The design of the machine provides for supplying each machine to give any one of a number of speed ranges See page 16 for particulars. The object of this is to provide a customer with the range of speeds most suited to produce efficiently the particular work to be dealt with. As a guide to the choice of a suitable range, we offer the following recommendations- 1 NORMAL SPEED RANGE will be found satisfactory for general-purpose work on any materials. 2 HIGH SPEED RANGE is recommended for use where the majority of the work consists of cast iron pieces and occasional aluminum details. 3 SPECIAL HIGH-SPEED RANGE is recommended for non-ferrous metals, aluminum, brass, and bronze work of all kinds. 4 LOW SPEED RANGE on all machines is recommended for work consisting mainly of large diameter high-tensile steel pieces or work involving wide forming cuts, and when high-speed steel tools are to be used on large diameters. 5 SPECIAL HEAVY DUTY DRIVE is fitted to the 48 and 60 machines only. This drive is recommended for machining extremely hard or high tensile steel pieces at maximum diameters. We are always prepared to advise upon the most suitable speed range necessary to machine components. VARIABLE SPEED MOTORS can be fitted to meet certain requirements. Particulars of these can only be supplied upon receipt of definite information concerning the particular work to be dealt with. THE COOLANT SYSTEM illustrated on page 10 is the one normally supplied for use with our Vertical Boring and Turning Mills. It entails the provision of channels in the concrete foundation and a coolant tank sunk to floor level. However, it is sometimes inconvenient to provide for this method, and to meet such cases, a Tray Type Cutting Coolant system is available 

consisting of a metal tray complete with checker plates and guards, switch, tank, pipes and fittings, and suitable electric suds pump. Prices can be supplied upon request. ATTACHMENTS. Where it is known that certain attachments will be required for use in conjunction with the machine, it is advisable to state this at the time of placing the order; it is not always possible to supply an attachment for a machine already installed, without incurring additional expense. Page 21 SPECIAL ATTACHMENTS SCREWCUTTING The Screwcutting Attachment illustrated consists of a change gear box mounted on the supporting arm boss behind the cross slide end bracket of the machine. This box connects up with the horizontal feed supply shaft. A lever operated dog clutch selects either feed or screwcutting motion. The Attachment is suitable for external and internal threading using the vertical feed of the machine, or for scroll cutting when the horizontal feed is used. Change wheels are provided to cut the following pitches: ENGLISH PITCHES

It should be noted that machines supplied with Screwcutting Attachment for metric threads must be fitted with special metric feed screws, saddle worm gear, etc. Machines having English screws and saddle gearing are unsuitable for metric threading, whilst those arranged for metric threading are unsuitable for English pitches. The addition of this attachment precludes the use of fine feeds, and in certain circumstances alters the standard speed and feed rates given on pages 16 and 17. Coarser pitches can be cut with the aid of an auxiliary gear box and we invite customers to submit their requirements when considering this attachment. Page 22 SPECIAL ATTACHMENTS TAPER TURNING-SPUR GEAR TYPE

The attachment provides a means of machining tapers by connecting the vertical and horizontal feed shafts of the machine by means of spur gearing. A friction clutch is interposed in this drive. Gears are arranged for compounding and an idler gear can be inserted in order to change the direction of the taper. The attachment is mounted on the left-hand end of the cross slide on right-hand single mills or on the inner ends of the cross slides of duplex mills. The control lever for quickly engaging the taper turning motion is placed adjacent to the existing control on the cross slide. The attachment will produce given tapers between 5 and 35 from the vertical or horizontal, but cannot be arranged to provide tapers greater or less than these. Suitable gears can be provided for any taper required within these limits, but these tapers must be specified and it will be apparent that an infinite range of tapers cannot be covered by the attachment. It should be noted that, in certain circumstances, the addition of the above attachment may restrict the capacity of the machine. The attachment is designed to produce either a Flat or a Steep taper, BUT NOT SPECIAL ATTACHMENTS TAPER TURNING-WORM GEAR TYPE The attachment provides a means of machining tapers by connecting the vertical and horizontal feed shafts of the machine by means of worm gearing. A friction clutch is interposed in this drive. This type of attachment allows for machining tapers with a small angle measured from the vertical or horizontal. Gearing suitable for practically any required angle up to 35 from the vertical or horizontal can be provided, but it is necessary to specify the tapers which are to be machined. It will be appreciated that an infinite range of tapers cannot be covered by the attachment. It should be noted that, in certain circumstances, the addition of the above attachment may restrict the capacity of the machine. The attachment is designed to produce either a Flat or a Steep taper, BUT NOT BOTH. The sliding tool holder can be supplied either air or hydraulically loaded. BEAM IN OPERATING POSITION Page 25 SPECIAL EQUIPMENT AXLE BOX EQUIPMENT PROVIDES EASY SET UP The holding equipment consists primarily of two self-centering jaws which grip the axle box on the horn cheeks. One of these jaws carries an auxiliary jaw with micrometer adjustment to allow the horn cheeks to be offset to the center of the axle box bore. This adjustment is sufficient to allow an offset in either direction. A pair of end stops are also provided for locating and setting the position of the bore relative to the end of the box. The boxes are also held in position by clamping, and special adjustable clamps are provided which will cover a very wide range of widths of box. Three boring bars are included in the equipment, one for rough boring, one for finish boring, and one for either under-facing or for radiusing the lower end of the bore. One additional tool holder is required to that already included with the standard machine. Page 26 SPECIAL EQUIPMENT l ϋ A TYPICAL EXAMPLE OF MULTI-TOOLING AS APPLIED TO VERTICAL BORING AND TURNING MILLS Page 27 SPECIAL EQUIPMENT PISTON RING EQUIPMENT The equipment consists of One standard tool holder to enable the pot from which the rings are produced, to be faced. Two gap type tool holders one roughing, one finishing each carrying two tools to enable the outside and inside of the pot to be machined at one pass. One multiple parting tool holder arranged to suit width of piston ring, complete with four tools. Alternatively a facing and parting tool holder can be supplied to enable each ring to be parted separately, one side being faced true. This is particularly useful for providing a perfectly flat surface for locating on a Grinding Machine if the rings are subsequently ground. The method of holding the pot on the machine is dependent entirely upon the shape of the pot base. Special jaws or fixtures can be supplied to meet these requirements.
