introduction Webster and Bennett have specialized in the manufacture of Vertical Boring and Turning machines since 1928 and have supplied many thousands of different models to engineering companies both in the UK and throughout the world. Models range from 36 dia table to 146 dia swing capacities, the smaller machines with single columns and the larger machines with double columns. This brochure illustrates the latest range of single column manually-operated models which are now in a rationalized form with Elevating Rail only. Webster and Bennett have a team of well-trained engineers who are capable of discussing these machines in the greatest detail either at our works in Coventry or in the customer's own works. The guide ways carrying the turret slide unit are lined with plastic-faced strips, as are all the associated gib adjustment strips, which are automatically lubricated.

Power clamping The clamping pressure to retain the cross-slide in the required position is applied by springs and is relieved hydraulically. The mechanism is interlocked by solenoid valves with the elevating motor and is controlled from the same control station. The clamps are automatically released before the motor can start and re- applied after it has stopped.

Lubrication Lubricating oil for all main bearings, driving gears, and gearboxes is supplied by an independent motor-driven pump unit mounted on the left-hand side of the machine body. This unit contains a filter, to ensure clarification of the oil, and also supplies the oil under pressure for the hydraulic machine controls. A separate motor-driven pump unit meters oil to the ample oiling points on the machine slide ways.

Description Turret The pentagonal turret is made from steel forging. The faces are machined and bored in position and provided with tapped holes for attaching toolholders. The turret holes are gauge size and fitted with quick-acting positive grip for boring bars and similar tools. The turret is fitted with an extremely powerful and efficient locking arrangement which clamps the turret onto its location face, this being in the form of a pair of large-diameter 60-tooth radially toothed couplings. The geared arrangement facilitates easy indexing by hand.

Chuck The standard chuck has four independently operated jaws and tee slots for clamps and fixtures. The jaws are separately adjustable on their slippers and are located by solid tenons. The drive to the chuck is transmitted through a hardened and ground pinion and a high tensile steel single-helical internal or external gear, spigotted, bolted, and dowelled to the chuck body. All sizes of machine chucks have taper roller bearings mounted on large diameter close- grained cast iron hollow spindles, which will carry both radial and thrust loadings.

Options Screw cutting This attachment consists of a change gearbox connected to the horizontal feed shaft, a lever- operated dog clutch selecting either feed or screw-cutting motion. Change gears supplied Automatic synchronization of pitch is a standard feature of this attachment. The screw-cutting attachment precludes the use of fine feeds, although a creep feed arrangement (see p9) can be supplied if required.

Taper generating When tapers cannot be obtained by swiveling the turret slide, an attachment may be supplied to produce tapers by connecting the vertical and horizontal feed shafts through change gearing. The attachment has a range of 1 to 40 subject to confirmation measured from either vertical or horizontal plane, and an idler gear is incorporated which provides reversal of tapers. A set of change gears for one stated angle is included with each attachment, but a range of gears may be supplied at extra cost. Where angles outside the range of this attachment are required, the manufacturer should be consulted.

Ram head This is designed to deal with tall workpieces when the main operation consists of machining deep bores which will not admit the standard turret head. It can be supplied and fitted in lieu of the turret head, or, since both are interchangeable, supplied as extra equipment for substitution when necessary, to suit specific work.

Options Pendant A joystick-operated pendant control is available on all machines. The speed and feed selection is mounted in the pendant together with all machine controls. When a pendant is supplied, the standard control panel adjacent to the machine is removed.

Swarf conveyor To facilitate easy swarf removal, an automatic swarf conveyor is offered which is located at the left-hand side of the machine, which enables the swarf to be quickly removed from the working area and deposited in a swarf bin at the rear of the machine.

Qualified toolholders In addition to the standard tooling equipment described on pages 10 and 11, qualified tooling can also be supplied to meet specific requirements.

Creep feed A useful feature that can be supplied is a creep feed arrangement by means of a servo motor coupled directly to the electro- magnetic feed transmission unit. This feature is particularly advantageous should a customer wish to fit digital readout equipment to the machine after installation.

Chuck jaws Standard and special A wide range of chuck jaw sizes and styles is available, fully meeting the majority of boring and turning applications. The full range of styles is illustrated here, sizes being listed in the table below. In addition, especially short or extra tall jaws can be supplied to deal with particular applications.
