There are two types of machining centers: the horizontal one and the vertical one. The difference lies in the orientation of the main axes. Horizontal machining centers (HMC) have an x-y-table with a milling cutter mounted on a horizontal axis across the table. This table can also be steered with a B-axis.
A horizon machining center is often used to machine smaller products faster. By using a pallet changer or exchange table you can simultaneously clamp or assemble and produce of process.
Which one is cheaper: vertical or horizontal machining?
In general, vertical machining centers are cheaper to purchase than horizon machining centers. If you mainly machine large, flat workpieces that only require a single operation, then (second-hand) vertical machining centers are probably the best choice. But if you often work on different sizes of workpieces in different shapes, horizon machining centers are a better choice. In this way you can eventually reduce the costs.
Buying a vertical or horizon machining center?
The difference in purchase price between vertical and horizontal machining centers can be compensated because these two types of machining centers are used in a different intensity. Research shows that the average usage of a vertical machining center is only 25 percent. With a horizontal machining center it's at 85 percent.
At Mach4Metal we sell used horizontal machining centers. This makes the price even lower than if you were to buy such a machine new. The fact that the horizontal machining center is second-hand doesn't affect the quality! Not convinced? All second-hand horizontal machining centers shown above are owned by Mach4Metal and can be viewed in real-life by making an appointment.
